Hits Misses and Predator Control

Here's my results from Laura and I's first week of hunting. I hope I can learn to hit the animal next time, lol. Bowhunting can be so rewarding, but usually its just frustration! At least i've been in the action.

Also i'm very impressed with the new groundblind, the ameristep penthouse, i bought for Laura for her b-day. Its absolutely amazing and 8 feet tall inside and $130. She can set it up and pick it up herself in seconds. I'll write an article about it soon.

And before I catch any flack for having a loaded weapon in a pic as I did with my big buck a while back. I was stalking on the way out with the weapon and handed it to her for a quick pic to remember the moment. Just crossing my t's and dotting my i's for the critics!

1st Weekend

At least you had alittle action! You got a pretty tough woman there - she have any sisters? Sounds like you use a compound and a cross bow. Which do you prefer?

xbow all the way

With the compound bow it is really hard to see the animal through the peep and mesh while lining up your pins. Even with my tritium fiber optic pins and good vision it’s still tough especially in lower light conditions. It is definitely doable but anything over 20 yards through that mesh would be too chancy imo, and I wouldn't want to risk wounding an animal when I have a crossbow to use which still shots great up to 60 yards and has exceptionally greater visibility on an animal . Last year I tried my compound bow in my small ground blind, but ended up having to take the mesh down for optimal shooting conditions which left me more venerable to catching a deer's eye while drawing. I successfully shot at a hog at 20yds, but got busted drawing by a deer at 15. Though with the penthouse you have way more room to stand and move around to draw and shoot a compound bow at any angle.

I went pick up Laura's crossbow at Cabelas Tuesday and the come to find out the trigger was broken too, so I had to drive right on back for a fix. At least parker fixing everything for free with their warrantee. Looks like I'll be slinging arrows out of the ground blind this weekend, hoping not to get busted at draw.

Thanks, tough she is, but sisters like her...notta, not even another woman like her!

penthouse

I got the penthouse on sportsmans guide. I'm a memeber and had a coupon so it was cheaper. It will work great for a compound. You can stand but the mesh windows are at seat level so you'll have to draw while seated usually. For the compound I have to use a smaller stool style chair. Like i said before its kind of tough to see through the peep and line up shots on the animal and weave through small sticks since at ground level you have way more brush as a deterent. If you have an fairly open area with 10-30 yard shots the blind would be great. If you have a hill to use it from you could possibly stand and shoot through the mesh with a downward angle. I like how the mesh is one huge peice so you can shoot anywhere and not worried about poles or nonmesh parts messing up the shot. Also it has 2 smaller windows of each side which I leave covered to blackout two sides, but i prop them up while unzipped so if an animal walks from behind you can just fold it down instantly and quickly with no noise and shoot in seconds. No other blind has that feature. Best blind out there for the $ imo.

Thanks for the feedback Orion

I'm looking at a few options. I have a matthews drenalin and its about 33' axle to axle. I have a small ameristep doghouse blind and it's really to small. I recently started checking out a NWR close to my area and its a great place just real thick and the section I'm looking to hunt theres not many trees for a climber. The ameristep brickhouse looks pretty nice but the penthouse has plenty of room and some nice features also. Will have to way out the options. There's only a 40 or so dollar difference and for the size of the penthouse it may be worth spending a little more.

bigger is better

with a compound bigger is always better, i tried hunting with my doghouse last year and it just drove me crazy trying to draw from such a small blind. I only had 1 or 2 angles I could shoot from and was disappointed. Same with my xbow it was hard to shoot too many ways with the limbs having enough room for a clean shot. Though i'm actually in the process of taking some replacement mesh and bungy cords with large saftey pins and meshing out the entire large sections on the doghouse for more view ability with concealment.
