Rifle scope

Ok guys. I'm looking to upgrade my scope. It will be sitting on top a Remington 30/06. What are some good choices that you guys like/dislike. I'd like to have something with adjustable yardage. (you know the one's with a knob you can manually turn to go from 100 to 200 yds. etc..... So what do you guys use?

scope

I will give you my opinion on scopes having gone through many in 50 years of deer hunting. if you are shooting a 3006 and hunting deer you really don't need all the knobs. a good 3x9x50 is good. I've had many scopes but for the money a nikon has been good for me. I once owned a redfield with all the knobs and gave it away and bought a nikon. THIS IS ONLY ONE OPINION.

Scope

KNOT - Do yourself a favor and buy a Zeiss Conquest 3.5-10x50

It will run you $600-$700 but it is well worth the extra $$$

I conducted a test several years ago. I had a buddy that sold scopes give me a Leupold VX3, a Meopta Meostar 4-12x56 and the Zeiss. At dusk, I took them in the backyard and the Meopta and Zeiss blew the Leupold away. Even well after dark, I could still see through those two scopes. If you have any outlaw notions, do NOT get a Zeiss cuz it will make an outlaw out of you...

If you look up Louques Firearms on this site, he will take care of you.

scope

I agree with JB, the zeiss is an excellent and probably the best. If you can afford the price get one.

Leupold

Leupold Vari-X scopes are excellent values, have a lifetime warranty, and are made in America! (though they do have a 'value line' made overseas). I love my Leupold scope and binocs. However, I do have an upper end Nikon that is very nice. The Zeiss and Swarovski simply do not represent a good value in my humble opinion.

Leupold

I have to second the top of the line Leupold models. As noted, made in America and fully transferrable lifetime warranty. I lost several Leupolds due to being submerged in my safe for over two weeks in Katrina. I had friends with many other high end scopes and they got no help regarding warranty coverage.

Leupold replaced every one of them with no paperwork and no questions. They stand by their products.

Great glass and great coatings. Leupold made me a lifetime customer!

.

OK here's my opinion on the subject. I'll start out with the higher end scopes down to the lower end. I currently own or have owned and got rid of all the scopes I will mention within the last three years. I do alot of shooting at the range and hunting. Here goes.
1- Trijicon 5-20x50 $1200. Mounted this scope on a 25-06 and could not get it to hold zero. Remounted using different rings and bases and still couldn't get it to hold zero. Put cheap scope on just to check gun, sub MOA group. Send it back to the factory and when it came back I returned it and got...
2- Zeiss Conquest 3-9x50. $650. One of the best I own. VERY clear, and as JB said, be careful, you could easily shoot after hours.
3- Zeiss Conquest 3-9-40. $399. Eye relief is not as go as my 50mm Ziess, but still very clear glass.
4- Leupold VXII 3-9-50 $400. OK here is where the REAL comparison comes in. I was hunting with both of my sons in a BIG box blind. One son had the Zeiss 3-9-50, I had the Leupold 3-9-50, and the other son had the Zeiss 3-9-40. At the very last bit of light, the two 50mm scopes were almost impossible to tell the difference. If there was a difference, it wasn't a $250 difference. Both 50mm scope were much better than the 40mm.
5- Nikon Buckmaster 3-9-50 $300. This scope is VERY good for the money. The only complaint you will get from me is that at very end of light looking towards the sunset, you will get some glare, all other scope mentioned before are pratically glare free. I could continue on with Redfield, BSA, Swift, but I think for a good hunting rifle, you should stay away from them, they are good for daylight hunting like squirrel and target shooting but not for low light deer hunting.

One more thing...instead of getting one with turret knobs for ajusting yardage, look into zeroing your gun using MPBR (Maximun Point Blank Range), instead of the old 1 inch high at 100yds. This method will allow you to aim center mass of the target's vitals from point blank range all the way out to roughly 280-320 yds, depending on some factors, and still hit the target. Read up on MPBR, VERY effective.
