Deer Hunting in Louisiana

What Works???

New to bow hunting. This is my first season with it. Last year was my first season rifle hunting
:-) so I'm fairly new lol. I went bow hunting on my boyfriends cousins property and spooked a doe while walking to my stand at about 2pm :-/ wasn't to happy lol. We got plenty of tracks out around my stand, one of which is about a 200-250lb buck. What kinda stuff does everyone put out on there plots? Whats some good tactics to use? We have used Acorn Rage, throw and grow (which hasn't really came up good this year, worked wonderful last year) We have also used that deer cane. We haven't really had them mess with anything but the corn. I'm shooting a cross bow with 20' or 22' arrows (can't exactly remember lol) with 100 grain. This is in the st helena parish area in Pine Grove. Last year during rifle season in St helena parish, in Greensburg, we put out rice bran and apple bran and put molases (spelling) on top of that and they ate the crap outa that. Any sugestions for a new hunter and BRAND NEW bow hunter? lol

ACORNS

if you have any oaks on your propery its best to go find some that are dropping good acorns that have deer sign under them ( droppings, trails, tracks) if you do not have acorns put out your rice brand and a camera in a few different spots and find a place where deer are coming during shooting hours! hope this helps you

Big Buck

If you are chasing that big buck you need to stop putting all those attractants out and start learning how to pattern deer. By this I mean find their trails, determine where they are going, where they are coming from, and when they are doing each. Trail cameras really help you identify what time of day & which direction the deer are moving.

Once you know that find a spot where two trails cross each other and move your stand to that spot.

One thing to keep in mind is only go near that spot when you are planning to hunt it or check your camera. Everytime you walk in that area you either leave scent behind or jump a deer, both of which will decrease your chances of seeing deer there again.

Don't get me wrong, sometimes those attractants will help you see more deer, but chances are the deer you see will be does & younger bucks.I say this from my own personal experience but I am sure others have had success using those products too.

Good luck to you and welcome to deer hunting.

The deer are coming from the cut over by my stand. there is also a path in the woods that they have been taking. The deer tracks are ALL OVER in front of my stand. I'm a VERY rough early riser, so I haven't been able to make it out there in the early AM yet. I had spooked a doe walking to my stand around 2PM last week. A big doe at that. she was in the thicket infront of my stand which is about 50 or more yards away. how ever where the most tracks are is about 30-40 yards away. I know last year in St Helena we caught 90% of our deer on camera moving at night. Even wild life n fisheries said they were moving odd in that area that year. Is it good to use doe piss to cover scent up?

We do have oaks on the property. I pass by one on the way to my stand. It's dropping a ton of acorns and they are some good ones too. But I don't see any sign of deer around it.

Moving at Night

I do remember hearing about how the deer in that area were being extremely nocturnal last year. If that is the case then I'm not real how to get around that except get good at using deer calls. Youtube has some great instructional videos on calling deer and when you should use the different calls. An effective call could absolutely help and usually does not hurt your chances of seeing deer. I have had some pretty good luck calling in deer over the last couple of seasons.

And as far as doe pee to cover up your scent, I say yes as long as it is just 'doe pee' and not the 'doe in estrous pee.' I usually spray my boots down real well with Primos Silver and sometimes add a little doe pee. Remember to spray the top AND BOTTOM of your boots.

Works for me

There is no miracle attractant that I've found but Record Rack super premium deer corn ( persimmon corn) sure helps way better than regular corn. U need to try to find this stuff in your area. Promise u will notice it makes a difference in deer activity around your stand.
