there are so many types of fish in the river. If you can get to the ponds behind the levee, there are ponds with giant bass and bluegill back there. the only thing is you might have to wear boots because the grass can be 7 inches or so high. for bass use plastic craws (preferably Berkley Powerbait Chigger Craw 4 inch model) crankbaits (preferably ones diving 3-5 feet in baby bass or any shad resembling colors) beetle spins (black and chartreuse)or buzzbaits (black, white, white/chartreuse, chartreuse, or black/red). for panfish use tube baits(any color depending on daylight and water color) small road runners(1/32oz or 1/16oz any color but the curly tail grub model usually works best because it can fit in their mouths the easiest) you may also catch the panfish with live crickets or live worms. for catfish use any type of stinkbait or you can use cut bait (shad, bluegill or mullet). look on google maps there are four ponds behind the levee if i were you i would go to the ones next to Colonial Heights Rd off of Jefferson highway. I might bring something to knock all of the grass down. Hope this is helpful to you.
There are ALL types of fish in the Mississippi River; catfish, bass, sac-a-lait, bream, goo, gar, choupique, goggle-eye, carp, buffalo...in fact, the Mississippi River restocks the Atchafalaya and other ares connected to this vast fresh water system.
Admittely, its tough finding other types of fish than catfish in the main river channel...but they are there. Find an eddy or slack water behind a rock weir, lock or intersecting creek/river (mostly above Baton Rouge).
Good luck and good fishing.
