For gas you're looking at around 12-15 gallons right now. If you bring $500 then you will have plenty. If you're looking to try and decrease the price and you don't mind fishing with someone, ask your captain to see if he could find you a partner. That would bring your cost down probably $150 or so (according to the price our captains use). I'll be out there Fri, Sat.,and Mon. Good luck!!!
If you've selected a guide (or have a couple you are considering) don't hesitate to ask them these questions. Ask about added costs (bait, fuel, drinks, food, fish cleaning, etc.) and even about customary tips. They don't mind you asking, that is how they make their money. Also ask about splitting a trip with someone if you're interested in that.
Food for thought. Go with a FULL TIME guide. Part time guides will not go the xtra mile. I know because I've been with some of them. One guide in particular was horrible and needed to call other guides to put him on fish. He was on phone frantically all day. I learned my lesson and no longer will I be pawned off to a part time guide. They have a FT job with benfits, etc. and they are not on water enough to keep up with fish movements and seasonal patterns. Not condeming all pt guides by any means. I have been with Jon Pellegrin, Bill Lake,Andre Boudreaux,Cuda Sheer and all have been very good and I highly reccommend these guides.
The cost for an inshore trip should not be $350 per person??? (Unless you are going alone)
Trips are generally based on the number of people and most inshore trips can handle up to four people. A trip for 4 people should run around $600.00 Some inshore trips have an extra fuel cost and some don't. That average rate is for a day charter only and if you are looking for lodging and meals, obviously that is additional costs.
Most charters will also clean your fish for no (or a very small)charge. The only other money would be for a tip for the captain which is not required, but highly recommended. I think about $20-$25 per person tip on a four-man trip is fair.
