big fish might have been shark , i saw one too. i was out monday morning and only caught 6 but the wind was westerly so i went back yesterday and the water was clean and after bout 8;30 the shrimp were gone and fish too. easterly wind gunna keep it dirty now till it goes back around. when i use to trawl the shrimp would follow the dirty water to the bank and it get rough they go back out , and the fish follow. all i use is a white minnow bait under a stopper. i used to bounce plastic cocohos by the powerline but i don't go out there no more. can't take the waves.
Yeah it very well could have been sharks , the swells were as big as porpoise swells but never did see the fish . There were dead catfish all over with a north easterly wind so it was blowing the dead catfish on that bank and I'm guessing that's what they were after .
You right about the shrimp though .. The only time we caught any fish was when the shrimp moved in on us . They moved out fast though , so the bite didn't last long . We may go back this weekend and try again , it's either on or it's not .
on ''PAPER'' there is a reef if you look at the reef location diagrams but in reality someone never built it and pocketed the money instead.
those who live and fish on the west side all know you can see all the way to kener and manchac and no barge or reef building crew could show up without being widely known about and nothing like that has EVER been on this side of the lake.
its really sad because they could at least bring in some old barges to sink or something if they dont want to spend money on this side of the lake.
i think it goes with the false premis many people have that the west lake isnt salty enough to sustain populations of the fish they want these reefs to attract.
i also remember hearing about a reef being built in st. charles parish waters but never paid it no mind because of location . according to basin fondation it was built. i guess they didn't want small boat competition so thats where they claim to have put it. i found this online and i am nor claim to be a computer expert so don't shoot the messenger please. roughly calculated on google earth. location,,,,30*08.077' , 90*19.048',,,,,,this is roughly out of peavine 6.15 miles east northeast heading 242.90,,,,,out of bc , northeast 6.58 miles heading 204.72 ,,,
there were 2 rigs in the southwestern corner that held specks and reds most of summer and fall. i'm sure shell pads are still there but finding them will be the trick. i don't see the sense in putting a reef 6 miles from shore thats no deeper than 2 miles.
Well the winds are suppose to be light in the morning . 4 mph out of the southeast and then around 3 pm the winds are suppose to pick up , rain , and go downhill for the rest of the weekend .
Do y'all think it'd be worth while to go try in the morning , or has it muddied up too bad ?
the two rigs in the southwest corner are gone along with most of the shell pads around then, not sure why they dug those up but i heard it was required they returned it to the pre rig natural condition.
the reef thats ''supposed'' to exist on the norco side was never built, the marker was put there and just a few weeks later a storm came through and washed away the marker, last time i saw it was in 4 feet of water by the washout halfway from peavine launch to manchac. later on i heard they had to wait for the new year to get more money alotted but somewhere along the way it never got done. the location where its supposed to have been i have fished many times and know the area well but i never found anything there but smooth flat bottom with no structures anywhere.
its not as deep there as other areas of the lake and maybe they decided it wasnt deep enough to avoid being a hazard or something but there should be some type of structure on this side even if its nothing more then shell reefs and rock piles
What did you catch em on ? Me and my lil boy went Sunday and fished the lake bank from south pass all the way to midways of the rocks throwing rattle trap and some top water , didnt catch the first fish and didn't see any shrimp .
Went back to the pass and broke out the shrimp and tight lined for about 20 minutes without a bite , and then some shrimp passed by and I told my son look at the shrimp , and then our poles bent over . Lol we ended up with 4 keeper black drum and a couple croakers . Once the shrimp passed it was over , we packed up and went home .
We were seeing some big fish action along the bank , I think it was a few jacks and some giant garfish . Look like they were chasing mullet but we couldn't get them to bite .
