Opening day of teal season was a big disappointment to say the least! We scouted and scouted for days trying to stay on a good concentration of birds, the water rises 6 inches overnight and pushes all the teal out! We actually only got one opportunity and missed all 3 birds.
Today was not a vision of what the teal season will be. Once this high water falls back out Monday or Tuesday and a slight north wind comes through Monday night, the teal will be swarming! Every year that we have a hurricane, the marshes obviously get churned up, which exposes seeds and other crustaceans that teal love, so yes, this will be an excellent Teal season and Big Duck Season, just not today.
What to do when there are no birds? Go Fishing! We loaded up the Skeeter and headed out about 930 with Dave and Kelsey in search of big reds. We stopped on the first honey hole, where on wednesday 6 boats of mine all caught over 50 fish a boat, nothing! I wound up running to the Lake Robin area, and paydirt! Fish were screaming drags and I was busy working the net. We finished up bouncing from point to point with fresh shrimp under a cork, catching our limits of both reds and drum!
