For all you people that get to hunt the early bow season, on sept.18 at 2:00pm the mature bucks will open up their first primary scrapes and licking branches. Licking branches tell the buck which doe is in the best physical shape to raise his young. A mature buck will travel all over his territory and make these on that day. Then he has no more need to come back to them very often. However every other deer that comes by will add their scent to it. So the odds of killing the buck that made them are very low, while chance to kill any deer is high. He will check each one a few times till he decides which doe group offers the most, then he will spend most of his time near there and abandon the rest of his area. So if u know of an area like this used every year, that is the best day to kill the most mature buck in your area.

Thanks deerman, i discovered bucks were doing this with the help of my cams several years ago but it doesnt help me because our season isnt open.lol this last fall watching a fawn eating everything its mother was eating, even pulling stuff out her mouth, thats how they learn what to eat. Then i started checking my cams and only got the big buck one time in a month, but many other deer many times. Hate to be crude but if it was about state of estrous of the doe she would be rubbing the other end.lol Wild animals cant afford to waste energy. When did alabama go to 3 bucks a year? They started the buck a day craze back in the day, now the've changed?

It has been a few years that they went to 3 bucks. the 2 deer a day limit which may be two does is crazy. some areas have a lot of deer and some don't. I don't think killing everything is the answer, but they have to compete with Miss. in selling licenses.
