beach,tent,fire,kayak boom
I always wanted to take my son camping on the beach to do some surf and night fishing but places are limited. We have camped in Chicot state park a few times it was great even thought the fish weren't biting. Follow up with me also because I'm also interested in some good places to camp on the beach. Thank you in advance!
Since you have a boat, Timbalier Island is where you want to go. As the ohter post said, there is a canal to dock for safe harbor, but make sure to ideal into the canal, because of the shitting channel in it. The channel used to be on the far starboard side going in, but no telling what it is like since Isaac came through. The attached areial photo has the coordinates on it, but is not a recent picture.
Johnson Beach is a federally managed spit of dunes outside of Perdido Key, a bit before Pensacola. Its only about a 3hr drive from NOLA. A few years back I rode my bike along the coast from New Orleans to just past Panama City (what a dump!) and it was the only legal beach camping I found. Theres no parking on the last mile of the road, and you have to walk/paddle at least half a mile past the roads end to camp, so there aint many folks out there.
I'd love to hear reports of other spots in Louisiana.
Do not know if it is legal to camp on Timabalier, but we have been doing it all my life and have never been questioned. The only problem last time was that they had a rig at the mouth of the canal to the island, was pretty noisy through a tent wall and the rig lights messed up your night vision.
Excellent public back down ramps- no fee.
Lighted secured overnight parking- no fee.
White sand beaches, crystal clear gulf waters, overnight camping, campfires allowed and if Corona is in a can, drink all you want- all at no fee.
Not only is it allowed, but the state of Mississippi encourages their use.
You need to check www.barrierislandsms.com
Horn Island, Petit Bois Island, Ship Island and Cat Island, you will need a seaworthy boat.
By the Biloxi Small Craft Harbor, you can see from shore some white sandy islands where people camp, that can be reached by kayak or a small boat.
Maybe this is what you are looking for. If so, enjoy.
im suprised no one has said fourchon, i dont know if its alright to beach camp there any more, but i can remember a couple years back the beach was full with people camping. head down hwy 1 towards grand isle, make the right at the store and the light towards fourchon. follow the road all the way down and it dead ends at the beach with concrete poles so you cant drive onto the beach, its not white sand but it is a fairly nice beach
Here is a pic of a guy we met on the Cape, you can see the sand and out 'Fishing/Camping' gear behin
The only place you will find with white sand is Florida that is anywhere close to here.
Only place i know of you have have a fire, beer and sleep on the beach is Cape San Blas/Port St Joe, Florida. We have stayed on the beach her many times with no issue, just keep your area clean.
No bottles on the beach!!
Leave the tent at home. Tents are the biggest issue on the beach.
If you can keep it low key, and dont need to have a fire then there are plenty of places in florida you can stay.
We go all the time if your intrested send me an e-mail
Wanted to add that most cities have some type of ordinance about prohibiting sleeping in public areas. This means no sleeping on the beach in basic terms. That being said… as long as your respectful, responsible and don’t have your equipment scattered across the beach you shouldn’t have an issue.
Bogue Chitto. You can find yourself a sandbar out there, and be out there. The water is clean too. Lots of outfitters to help you shuttle too. I like the folks at Bogue Chitto Tubing and Canoeing. They treat me good. Make a fire. Drink beer. Cookout and camp. Not far from BR either. My second vote is for that island you can see in Biloxi from the shore. My third is Timbaleir if you got a bigger boat to get there.
It's been some years but with the current situation on the gulf you might want to try the mudhole above the first set of locks above lettsworth, not salt water but it used to have a sandy beach and did not cost you a dime, drank many beer there in the early 70's
