Giant Salvinia on West Pipeline Canal

Lacassine Duck/Deer Hunters,
Boat access to the West Pipeline canal will be nearly impossible due to a dense mat of dead Giant Salvinia (Salvinia molesta). Access to the Lacassine Wilderness area and most popular duck hunt area on the refuge will be limited to Bayou Misere and Lake Misere.
The Federal Refuge and LDWF (State) treated this canal with herbcides 3 times this summer in an effort to keep up with the plants rapid growth rate. Cooler water temps will help to kill bottom layer and allow the dead plant material to sink to the bottom. The dense mat will stop all outboard, surface-drive, and air-thrust boats.
