Freshwater Fishing in Southeast Louisiana

Fish kill, how long before water is back to normal

Went look in the bayou Lafourche in the backyard yesterday and the fish were at the surface sucking air. I rescued one small socalait by hand and put in my 75 gallon bayou style freshwater aquarium. Beautiful addition. Today i put in the pirogue and went for a paddle. I saw big bass everywhere bearly hanging on. The water started smelling and turned to that blackish color. I notice all the socalait were dead and floating. The bass and perch were still hovering the surface. I hope some of those bass can make it. Beaks my heart to see the fish suffering like this. Anyone know how long it takes for the water to return to normal or if it'll get worse? Huricannes suck.

I agree with Tom ... We've caught good on the northshore rivers since Katrina , but nothing like it was before .

you got me

well can't be that accurate, but i saw about a dozen dead bass floating and saw about a dozen bass still swimming near the surface when looking into the bayou so i was estimating. None were floating in the current and most of those were trapped within lilies and branches I set as fishing structure so they died from that spot and not further upstream I'd imagine. Though my scientific calculations could be wrong and only 49.9% may be dead, lol!

Where about In bayou lafourche? I have a pond in my back yard and would see if I can save a few bass by putting them in my pond

Thibodaux

In Thibodaux. I hope the whole bayou isn't as bad as it is here, but I have a feeling it is. Saving some bass sounds like a good idea.

Fish

I took a good look today around the Amite and tickfaw river . Lots of small bass and bream all floating on the edge in the grass . But not the massive kills like for Katrina . The dead fish for Katrina were so thick , it was like carpet across the river . I think Katrina killed every fish in the river . Looks as if that's all the fish that will die this time we will be in good shape .

Fish Kill

What if that IS all the fish? Don't know of anyone that would say the fishing was as good as before Katrina.

Dead fish

I hope it's not all the fish ! Lol there were some shad also that I noticed but the fish were like 2-3 inch bream , 6-8 inch bass and a few big shad 8 ' ? I've caught nice stringers of big sacalait and have seen some nice stringers of bass . So it seems the smaller fish took the blunt of the kill . The bigger fish may die off later ... Idk but hope not .

I didn't see any fish bobbing for air either so hopefully that's a good thing .

Drewb irregardless is not a word ... I'm sure you know that . Was that a trap of some sort ?? Or did I finally catch the king of grammar slipping ?

Good Water is back

Letting everyone know the water in Bayou Lafourche is back to nonlethal conditions. I don't think the fish was too severe here. The fish in my minnow trap are no longer dying.

Didn't see many fish dead in the bayou in Raceland, but there are quite a few dead in Theriot's canal.

TANGI RIVER

I spent all weekend at cleaning my camp on tangipahoa river and saw dead fish all weekend. We were really starting to catch fish(bass) on the river the last two years, I guess thats going to be over now.
