Just an FYI
I'm posting this to tell everyone about my recent experience. Hopefully it will help one of you one day. I recently purchased a 225 mercury optimax. Monday afternoon I was running about 60mph (4800) rpms and with no warning it killed. Stopped dry. I put it in neutral and went to crank it back up. 'click' nothing. The first thing that popped into my head was The motor seized. After getting a tow home I went to work to check everything I could hoping I did t have to get it rebuilt. I checked the air compressor, battery, and fuses. All were fine. I then pulled the plugs and tried to turn the flywheel. To no avail I put everything back together in disgust. I then I started to search the Internet to see what my options were when I came across a thread talking about lower units locking up. When I pulled the plug on the lower unit And nothing but water and metal shavings came out. Feeling a little better I dropped the lower unit and went turn the key. VROOM first crank it started right up. I hope this helps somebody out one day.
