SCENT CONTROL

IN MY 40 YEARS OF DEER HUNTING I CAN'T REALLY SAY WHAT IS THE BEST. I THINK THAT MOST OF THE SCENT CONTROL ON THE MARKET IS JUST A WAY TO GET YOUR MONEY AND REALLY DON'T WORK. i'VE GOTTEN TO THE POINT WHERE I DON'T USE ANY AND SEE AND KILL JUST AS MANY DEER. I DON'T THINK YOU CAN FOOL DEER BY APPLING SCENTS, YOUR SMELL WILL STILL BE THERE. JUST HUNT WHERE THE WIND DOESN'T CARRY YOUR SCENT. AS FAR AS DOE PEE, WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY AS THERE IS DOE PEE ALL OVER THE WOODS.

DOWN WIND--u can wear after shave if u are downwind--if u are upwind nothing works. If you are in a box blind thats dark inside with long slit shooting ports u can wear any clothes any color . back windows in boxes are bad . I have my boxes built to where i can always get in one thats down wind .

The Best

The best product for scent control in my opinion was a product by southern outdoor products called No Scents At All. Stuff worked darn near perfectly. And it was made right here in Louisiana. I still have a gallon of the stuff that I just found hidden away that I didn't know I still had. Hope it is still good after a sitting up for well over a year.

Agreed

I think they are all money taking gimmicks, altho i find the clothing to be fairly comfortable. Also my Scent Blocker gear is much warmer than any of my non scent blocking gear. *obviously not counting jackets, etc* Its all a matter of being down wind or hoping the buck is so intensely chasing a single doe that he ignores your presence is he does smell you.

For spray scent killers i use Scent Killer fall blend usually. Tried several others but i honestly don't see much different between them. If the wind blows wrong they will still smell you.

As for the Doe pee that was mentioned, sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. I had a friend of mine who owns a high fenced property in northern bama, hand me a cup of real hot doe piss from a doe in his breeding pens, and to be honest it had almost NO smell *to a human nose*. Whereas the doe pee you buy in the store smells not only 100x stronger, its all together a different smell. That being said i have killed several bucks that i watched walk up to my Tinks 69 rags, but majority of the time it doesn't work i find. As for Code Blue.....Never worked for me, even a little.

my $.02

.

i hang my hunting cloths outside during the season. also on the way to my stand i like to break off a twig and some leaves off the bushes or small pines near my stand, i will crush this in my hand and rub it all over then put the crushed leaves in my front shirt pocket. Good luck this year.

Scent

Ive used a few scents in the past but haven't noticed a difference . Like already said they still smell you . Also like samu said I have had success with the tinks69 doe in heat . It's not a cover scent but sometimes attracts bucks . I've seen
Bucks follow the scent to me like a hound dog with his nose on the ground . But not every time , only during peak breeding periods .

Vanilla flavoring in a mister works very well to cover ur footprints and helps in overall scent masking.

I don't believe in using scents on the market as I just feel that it's a waste of money. Natural scents are much better. I do use the scent free detergent which gets all the smell out of your cloths. I always keep my cloths in a plastic bag with tree limbs and leaves. I don't put my hunting cloths on until I get out of my truck and sometimes I might roll in the dirt a little to cover my scent if I'm going to sweat on my long walks. Other than that, I hunt all natural. Main thing is to keep the wind in your favor. Hope this helps

hmm...

I rarely hunt in camo, have never used scent control, dip in the woods, wear the same clothes I wore around the campfire that day, take a leak by the tree I'm hunting with, and I don't get busted any more than people I know who are extremely cautious with scent and camo.

I'm in no way knocking those who do, but I just don't think it's necessary.

downwind

i agree with what most have said already. just hunt the wind and it doesn't matter what you look or smell like. some food for thought...if all the scent killers, scent free clothing, etc... that are advertised and promoted on t.v. really worked, then why is it that time and time again on these hunting shows, the hunter misses out on a nice buck because he gets winded? good luck to everyone...come on 1 oct!!!!

scent

if you know any K9 handlers, wear scent blocker and spray down and see if he can track you . I already know the answer . I was a blood hound handler and a Drug Detector K9 handler . Try it without any thing--then suit up .

Ok

Im interested ... What happens ?? The dog finds you ? Aren't blood hounds sense of smell like 10 times better than a deer ?

lol

Didn't you guys watch mythbusters? Its impossible to completely fool a dog's sense of smell. Your only hope is to mask it with something they want more and even that doesn't always work. Deer are the same :)

B.A. Tree

I used to use a pine scent made by B.A. Tree that also came in an oak scent, but I hunted mostly pine woods. I wasn't trying to cover my scent as much as I was trying to blend in to my enviroment. They used to carry it at Walmart, but haven't seen it in a couple of years, wish they still had it. I only used it during bow season when I was hoping for a close encounter. You can also take a hand full of fresh pine needles and break them in half and rub them on you cloths, makes them a little sticky, but you smell like a tree and don't cost you a dime. My .02

Yea samu your right . Idk I guess the way turkeyhunter has is worded . I was thinking something else like maybe it was something i had never heard before .Lol then at the end he says try it without , then suit up . Is he talking about camouflage ? Or the pillow stuff they put on to let the German Shepard bite on them with Lol

That one flew right over my head ... Lol if I were trying to elude a dogs nose I would use food , or a female in heat , like the song ' old red ' .

Scent

Choupic - Female in heat or food will not work either. There are MANY drug dealers sitting in prison that thought that as well.
I've never been a drug dog handler but I did have an explosives detection dog for a number of years.
Trust me, there was NOTHING that could distract her when she knew she was on the clock.
To the person that said he never worried with scent and didn't get busted any more then people that worried about it. I thought the same thing to until someone asked me how I knew that. They asked me if I knew how many bucks didn't come my way because they smelled me WAY before I could see them?

Yep

JB ... Good thing I'm not a drug dealer huh ! But I've had dogs my whole life basically , and not claiming to know it all . But in some of those years of experience , I've seen some great rabbit and coon dogs not want to leave the truck or boat if a gyp is in heat nearby . Maybe I just have horny dogs ? Maybe police dogs are different than hounds ?

I do agree with you on whether it matters or not to be cautious with your scent while deer hunting . Some guys will never know what they could have seen if they would have been more serious with scent prevention . Although I have seen a guy kill a deer over a baited stand smoking a cigarette , after I advised him not to .

Dogs

Choupic - They are tested thoroughly. They must have a very high drive. That drive can be either food or toy. Not so much a prey drive though. It is all a big game for them, unless you have to go off of their food drive. When I would work mine, she had a very specific toy. I let her play with toys all the time but she only got this one particular toy when it was work time and she knew it. If she saw me grab it, she knew she was on the clock and all the BS stopped...

cigarette

Its funny you should mention that. I was in Kansas on a pheasant hunting trip one time, and met a farmer who had several deer as pets. And when i say pets, i mean he would open the back door and they came in the house and would lay on the couch like dogs. I also noticed he had some HUGE mounts on the wall, and we got to talking. Blah blah blah, long story but in the end he taught/showed me that deer LOVE tobacco. His pet deer, even ate cigarettes like dog cookies... Since that trip i have noticed several people i know who smoke while on the stand seem to still see deer, even at short yardage (30-60 maybe less). Maybe its coincidence but i still find it kinda funny.

ive used every type of scent control know to man and ive found sticking to natural scents work the best. i wash my clothes in baking soada being that its a neutralizer and when i get to the woods i get a handful of fresh pine needles and break them in half and rub my boots and clothes down. works everytime havent had a deer smell me yet. stick to natural scent works everytime

Stogies

When I was younger I smoked ... Back when the cattle used to free range all over the place . Well on my way out the woods one day I stopped to smoke a cigarette and sit on a log for a minute . After a minute or two it sounded like an earth quake , the woods sounded like all the trees were falling down . The cigarette smoke started a stampede , I didn't realize the cows were 150 yds from me . They did not like that smoke smell !

There is an older guy I used to hunt with that was a chain smoker . That dude killed more deer than I did every year ! Never could figure that one out . Maybe like you say Sam they like that tobacco ...

Scent control

I wash my clothes with baking soda, store them in big zip locks, every morning before i hunt i take a bath in baking soda and water. When i get to the woods and put my clothes on i spray down with scent a way. Never been busted since i started doing this. Now i do smoke cigarettes but only when i make it back to my truck. I used to hunt with an older guy and he didnt use scent killers, he smoked on the way to his stand (a 5 gallon bucket), chewed while sitting on that bucket and still managed to kill more deer than me. Its always been a mystery to me.
