No doubt theres alot of widgeon grass in the center of the wma plenty plenty grass also have some around stump lagoon. Im not really sure if the mrgo closing has affected the area or why so much grass is growing now i have no idea but its out there for sure. Im just not sure what ducks are doing around eastern marsh where theres no grass just saltwater especially bobs lakes or bayou marron. Supposively though some of the best hunts come late morning when the ducks come rest in those big lagoons around bobs lakes and lake eugine especailly late season there are a few articles on the area.
The Biloxi marsh is a brackish marsh. The Pearl River dumps a lot of fresh water into that marsh, and when the spillway is opened, it all goes into that marsh as well. Closing the MRGO has greatly decreased the salinity in the marsh as well. Pre closing, the south side of the lake was at 6-8 ppm salinity, and the northern point of the marsh was 10-12 ppm. It was projected that the closure of the MRGO would cut those numbers in half. Widgeon grass is a fresh water grass, but it is the most salt tolerant fresh water grass around. I believe it will grow in anything less than 14 ppm, and thrives below 7 ppm. It will not survive in pure sea water. That is why a storm with a big surge pushing pure sea water in the marsh, kills most of it, and it takes a year or two to grow back in good amounts. Years without storms = a lot more birds that stay around longer. If they open the violet diversion, the whole S.W. portion of that marsh will almost be a fresh water marsh.
Yea whatever it is the marsh looks phenomenal really. I found a few other spots identical to the ones we smoked the ducks in last year...broken marsh with widgeon grass or potholes ...havent tried huntin the 'larger ponds that are 500yds long' however the guys tell me they have some real good flights at daylight. All i know is the spot i hunted didnt get rolling till about 7am but it kept rolling for hours and hours many days. Flights of big ducks every which way somedays..Like duckillr said the pearl dumps alot of freshwater in there i hope and think it does. Believe it or not the most ducks i ever seen was around noon they come to roost it was awesome and they flew even better after we limited all we could do is watch. They come in real real high from who knows where and drop straight down so they are feeding somewhere far aways i think. May just hunt pearl for teal season during the week..ill make one more scout in biloxi for teal a few days before...i refuse to go to pearl on opening day no way to small area ill take my chances at biloxi for teal opener then go speck fishing after.
No doubt they are and i did see flocks of 15-20 mottles in the interior marsh while scouting biloxi marsh...but these ducks were in perfect form literally a V shape with 5 ducks on one side and 10 on the other..they were really big ducks though these werent young mottles..i seen em about half mile away over the bobs lake and they never broke formation..you can tell a mottled duck brown as can be these ducks i seen were grey with some black and also a little white on the wing..which would lead me to believe a gadwall but could be wrong who knows.
Sounds like Greys to me too based on your description. I only brought that up because someone mentioned that Motts usually only fly in pairs.
Seems like every year during teal season I'll have big groups of Motts pouring into the decoys haha then come big duck season Ill be lucky to have more then one pair come in.
Ill be heading to Venice tomorrow to scout some areas I will post results asap. Getting more and more excited every day!
Sure its possible.. I was in Biloxi the other day and saw a few Motts but that was it. Was hoping to see a few teal as well.
