The most important GI fishing tip I can give you is get out early and I mean early 90% of the fish caught on GI this time of year are before 8am or at night. Next fish the high tide when you can. Fishing the lights at night on a good high tide with live shrimp is a almost given good trip. PS If you see the trout around the lights and they are hard to catch. Use light line and a hook only with your live shrimp. The pro's call it free lining a shrimp.
Hope I don't get hit too hard for this but ... Years ago maybe 22 ? We made 4 blank trips in a row . The fifth trip we made we landed on top the fish ! Everything we threw out there the speckled trout gobbled up . After 30 minutes of catching straight keeper trout I told my buddy and my brother that we had better stop and count fish . Well my buddy had some sort of personal vandetta towards these trout and I did to , to an extent , for the 4 previous bad trips we had . So we didn't stop to count and continued to put fish in the boat . It was like pure satisfaction . When the bite quit we looked in the box and knew we had over our limit .
Make a long story short ... When we got back to the truck mr game warden was leaning on our truck waiting to greet us . If I remember right , we had 20 fish over the limit . The warden lined the fish down the highway one by one . It put a damper on our excitement and high fiving .
So ... If and when you find the fish just remember the limit . Don't do like we did and continue to put fish in the boat when you think you may be at your limit . If we felt like this with only 4 bad fishing trips I can imagine your at the breaking point with 17 bad fishing trips ! Just hang in there . Perseverance will pay off in the long run .
Thank you for all the help. It really gets me to thinking. Thats one thing i love about this website. I was born with a pole in my hand and ill never quit working at what i love. Ill be fishing that area as hard as i can around baseball and school the next four years and hopefully ill figure it out. If yall see a little green land rover freelander down there give me a wave and wish me luck.
Thanks,
Ty
i talked to a fishing guide from grand isle today they had 5 specks so dont feel bad guys its not that yall dont know how to fish grand isle, its just grand isle isnt putting out the fish of its norm. hey jis my old mans gonna give you a call tomorow to line up our trip, we did ok this morn dont have the exact total i think 15 to 17, we were on a decent bite but rain and lightning chased us in early. will post the details tomorow
Went to Grand isle this morning to fish in the surf on both Grand Isle and Elmer's Island. For the past three years I have gone down there and caught fish on the beaches. This entire summer I have done the same things, but this year I have basically drawn blanks. Today the water was as pretty as I have ever seen and there were mullet and bait fish everywhere, but I didn't see anyone catching keepers. I think I'm done with the area this summer. Tough year. I'll be back next year, hopefully the fish will too.
Wow, I have actually had the exact opposite results as you all have had this year. I usually do not have much luck fishing down there but this year I have been wearing them out. I think the difference is that this year I have been doing most of my fishing at night until about 8 a.m. My wife and I have limited out on trout several times this summer and have not once put a boat in the water.
Fish the Fourchon side of the Grand Isle bridge. You can get there as early as you want, but I have found that the larger speckled trout usually do not show up until 2 a.m. or sometimes later. At times they will bite artificial but usually they want either live shrimp or live pogies. I have had them not touch a live shrimp but would hit a pogie as soon as it touches the water, but live shrimp usually works well.
Yes I am talking about the west of the bridge. I have not been out there much during the week but even on the weekends there is enough room to fish from the bridge.
I highly recommend that you DO NOT pull your boat up by the lights for a few reasons. First is because I think you might disrupt the school because the the fish are not just under the lights, they are in the shadows just beyond the lights too. Second is because you will end up getting your lines tangled with people fishing from the bridge.
I have never bought pogies so I'm not sure how much they cost. I always cast net my own shrimp, pogies & finger mullet. Before you ask me exactly where I catch my bait, I will go ahead and tell you that I rarely catch bait at the same place two trips in a row. I just try different spots off the side of the road from Fourchon to Grand Isle. Sometimes it only takes one stop but other times it may take a couple of hours.
Also, I have even had decent luck fishing the beaches during the first couple of hours after daylight and the last couple of hours before dark. I usually go either to the east end of Elmers or on GI across from Sureways. I sometimes fish the rocks behind Bridgeside too.
Between the whole ummmmmmmm thing, the repeat pics that have nothing to do with the comment he is attaching the pic to, and the constant use of the word 'sowwy', this guy will leave you shaking your head. It's like you want to ignore it, but you find yourself clicking on the comment to see what he has written this time around. JLS, you are one captivating individual.
Drew, I have heard the same from a bunch of other people as well. Maybe for once in my life I actually ended up going on the best weekends of the summer instead of the worst! Usually my luck works the other way, leaving me on the island with no tide, muddy water or thunderstorms the whole time. Maybe mother nature decided to finally pay me back.
