We're in central tensas, but its been bad all over. We have gotten a few rains that we didnt get last year, but not enough to fill water holes. That one has been a bowhunting hotspot since '95, it went dry last summer and never has filled full since. The drought hurts browse which stresses them worse than actual lack of surface water.
We are in Catahoula parish, and last year the only thing that made was hard mast. This year we are lucky and had blackberries and muscadines make a good crop. Last year the plant leaves were so dry they would crumble in your hands and the drought was reflective in the body size, fawn survival, and horn quality that we had, since several bucks had their racks turn out smaller than the year before. Drought is areal killer!!!
I sometimes travel hwy.4 thru beouf wma and it seems things are much better south of 4 than north. I was just looking at some muscadines and thinking what a great food source, loaded with sugar and water, the seeds are like wheat or small acorns and the skin is loaded with minerals. Soon as they started falling the deer stopped eating pellets as much as they were. Like u said we had a tremendous blackberry crop and the french mullberry are loaded.
Found this little fawn today. Mother was close by. Checked it over and couldnt find any sign of injury or very many ticks. Concluded it died from lack of oxygen to the brain.
