I love this time of year when u find out if all the hard work and letting young bucks walk was worth it. U decide, last year or this?

If u were hunting where u were only allowed one buck, would u shoot this one?

Just Depends

To me that deer is a cull which needs to be removed from the herd so it will not pass along any bad traits. What i would do is try to take a young hunter that has never taken a buck before. He or She would be tickled to death over that buck.

It gives me more enjoyment to see the young hunters excited and grinning from ear to ear more than anything.

Hope ya have a great season!

deer

Nice looking deer, but he's older than the one i showed. This kind of horn is usually caused by injury to the horn when its growing, not genetics, so he could very well be similar to yours next year. The thing is, if u kill many big bucks you'll kill a lot of 8pts., this deer is unique even tho not the biggest or prettiest.

You May be Correct

You are surely correct on this he is unique. I have heard it was from a accident that caused that type of thing to happen to antlers. I don't believe that any-longer and i once did. Reason being is this, Myself, my dad and my brother have a 600 acre track that we hunt on. We had a few older mature bucks that were just awesome 6 to 7 points on one side and the other side looked like the deer in your picture. We thought the same thing that maybe they were hit by car or something like that that caused it. Well, my dad was able to take out one of the Jacked up bucks in bow season with his crossbow. The deer aged at 5 1/2 and weighed 260 lbs hide guts and all. He was huge and had a beautiful set on antlers on one side, the other side was just gnarled up, but heavy. Season went along and the other one that was Jacked up happened to step out on the last evening of Primitive weapon. My brother took him, he was uniform and almost a 7 on one side and the other was just dropped downed and with little stickers and 2 tines, but it was really massive. This buck weighed in at 243 lbs and age at 5 yrs of age. Those were the only 2 that we seen on trail cameras with that type of trait to there horns. We are very particular about what we take on our land and manage our herd to the best of our ability. These deer were taken season before last. We have trail cams that take the pic and send to our email, which is so nice not to have to disturb the area but about once or twice a month. Last yr we noticed 3 young bucks that appeared to be having the same antler trait as the two old mature bucks my dad and brother were able to remove from the herd. Now this year you can really tell that the 3 young bucks we seen last year with the unusual horn are direct offspring of the two mature bucks that were removed.

Everyone has the opinions and all but it just seems strange if it was by a accident why would we keep seeing the same trait on the same side of the antlers as the 2 older bucks that were removed?

It was good talking with you. Haven't been a member of this sight very long but i love it. It is very informative and i have learned allot of things that i didn't know.

Have a great day!

Big Red

welcome

Welcome to the sight, no better place to keep up with the whole state, hunting and fishing. We also have had deer with nice one side and long spike or so on the other. We have one now about 61/2 that has never had much on his right side but as many as 6 on his left. This particular deer seems injured his horn but these are first pics. As i get more pics it may become clear what happens. Course my wife has already said if she sees him pow, pow, pow!!!

Yep i Know what ya mean

My wife doesn't get into hunting to much, well i say that but she would go with me i believe if there was room in my stand. I have a 4 x 6 stand, with a 12 foot tower. In the mornings i am safe to hunt by myself cause no one is getting up that early. In the afternoon that is a different story. I have my youngest daughter which is 7 that is going to be with me in the stand every chance she gets. I am pretty lucky on where i hunt. I can walk to my stand from my the back door of my house in about 10 minutes. We have allot of big mature bucks also, they are just really nocturnal. You have to have your game face on if one of those big boys come out. Cause generally they don't stay out in the shooting lane very long. I live in West Carroll Parish, North East La, win i was a kid you were lucky to see a deer track any where close to my house or my mom and dads rather. Now it is just the opposite, when i was a kid most land was farm land. Now that farming isn't to great for the area any longer allot of the land has went to CRP and Tree Programs. Man has it changed, Deer and Hog are everywhere. West Carroll has really picked it up in the past ten years or so.

Big Red, you're so right about wc, my family is from lp and i know the plane hunters too well.lol Since wc has very little public land its a well kept secret. Its true that injury(esp to leg) will cause funny growth, but sometimes nothing does. It just goes to show how rare a big perfect typical is. One side or not, those are trophy deer. Show us some pics. You're a lucky man to have kids that hunt, and your wife too.lol Mine never saw a morning worth going for, if they wont come out in the evening t5hey can just get bigger.lol Good luck on those big, old, deer, none of them got that way by being stupid and spending much time out in daylight hours.
