Inshore Fishing in Lake Borgne / Chef Menteur

Lake Borgne strange fish????

Drifted across Lake Borgne near the Rigolets today. Clean water. The water was being busted up by a fish I did not recognize. I have fished since I was 5 (35 now), but I couldn't recognize this fish. We threw into the fray, but only caught ladyfish and gafftop. The fish in question leaped from the water in arcs about a foot off the water and they looked like little tuna. Not sure what they were, but my 20 lb. leader line got broken three times. Might have been sharks, but I really want to know what this leaping fish was. Looked broad in the middle when it jumped with a forked tail; and there were hundreds of them. Any help is appreciated.

Spanish

Macs are my guess. Fished the lake this weekend and saw several large schools on the northwest side, so not too far from you.

schooled leaping fish

I witnesses this exact same thing several years ago. I actually heard them before I saw them. They were behind the boat around the shallows of the Alligator Point region. Looked back to see hundreds of them jumping a long ways. They were not slender like any Mackerel.More like a wider Pompano but I didn't think they would have been in shallow waters like that. My guess was Bonita but didn't think they would be that shallow either.
Who knows.

spanish mackerel

Last weekend I ran into fish jumping out of the water right at the mouth of the West Pearl. I saw the little glassminnows around and decided to cast a few times. Turns out that they were spanish mackerel about 16-18' long. Tasted good with a little lemon butter and tony's in the oven!!

my guess

I think the fish you saw is probably atlantic bumper. A member of the jack family. Were the fish you saw about 1 pound and had some yellow tint to them but mostly silver looking. Not very big, probably about a pound!!!

These weren't the fish that broke you line.

Mike,I have never in my life heard of an Atlantic Bumper but the description sounds like what I saw FWIW.

Atlantic bumper

Yes,they looked exactly like this. Pretty sure there were some sharks making them jump out there.

strange fish

Thanks for the posts. In hindsight, I think they may have been mackerel. They didn't seem as wide as the pic posted of the Bumper and they were definitely bigger than a pound. Looked to be between a foot to a foot and a half long. Very silver colored from the quick looks we would get when they jumped. Never had Spanish Mackerel break me off so easy, though (with 20lb. fluorocarbon leader). It was a heck of a show, though!

mackerel

Yeah if they were longer and slender then it was probably spanish mackerel. They have serious teeth so they can cut through mono fairly easy. Just depends how they are hooked... if their teeth can tough the line.
