During low water the ramp gets very level and hard to float the boat.
Break ins at the ramp are not uncommon. There was even a body found there one day. This is just an old ramp with absolutely no facilities, no maintenance. Not even sure if what its original purpose was as there is a railroad rail on the north side. Maybe it was some ancient unloading facility???
If the river has been high and is dropping fast there have been times when you need to bring a shovel to clear of the ramp of foot deep mud left by the big muddy!
It is really crazy that the state doesn't have any landings on the river. Arkansas has landing all up and down the Mississippi River I have been told.
Oh and the catfishing. The grain elevator right now is being rebuilt so I don't think the fishing is going to be that good if that is the destination. The smaller catfish are better tasting than the big ones... but I like catching big ones.
When the grain elevator is operating the fish you catch are so fat they have a bad taste. If you can keep them alive for a week or so at home without feed they will taste a whole lot better.
^5 Mike you hit nail right on the head, It would be nice it there was a good ramp that was State upkeep maybe that good idea, How would we approach that sitution??.. Also better fish Up river away from Grain Elevator My dad&mom fish further up river like between Allendale Plantation&Orange Grove Antique Store on River Rd
I think it's a dangerous place for the average sportsman. Right now might not be as bad, but right now is the exception. Those tows put out a very big wake, and they really can't slow down going upstream with a load. Can your boat handle a 6 to 7 foot wake? The floaters (things floating downriver) can take you out too. The floaters you can't see are the ones that can take out your lower unit. Unless you were raised by someone who brought you out there, I couldn't advise you to launch in the MS to go fishing. If your boat is big enough to handle those types of situations, you surely won't be able to launch it at that launch near the bridge. Be safe. Pick the 99% other places in LA to go.
There's a ramp near the I-10 bridge on the downstream side at BR. Take the levee ramp at South Blvd.and go left.
