This happened right on some of my fishing grounds,Literally a few hundred yards from my buddys wharf we fish from when we are in the drinking mood (dont drink on the boat)
Myself and my girlfriend were fishing a couple miles away down the ship channel that evening and I could tell something wasnt quite right..water was nice and flat then suddenly the wind picked up...I had not checked the weather before going out but was planning on making it in after a short trip anyways. As soon as the wind picked up I had both of us checking weather conditions. We left shortly after that. About an hour or so later there were reports of trees laying over and power lines down with all the bad weather..
This could happen to alot of people but IF you take the precautions its completely avoidable.
As we were leaving the spot we were fishing we had a loaded down boat (people) send a huge wake towards us while we were putting on our life jackets..It easily could have been us, I decided to hit the electric start and throw the motor into gear before snapping my life jacket and pointed us bow up towards the wake...No doubt if I didnt do that we could have capsized.
God bless the guys in these incidents but being on a boat definitely requires some common sense as slight as putting on a life jacket.
some people mite hate me for this, but, i hope they make it a law, that everyone in a boat must have a pfd on while underway!!!! i would rather see people uncomfortable, than dead!!!! you gotta wear a seatbelt rite!!! no they don,t save everyone, but i bet they save a vast majority!!!!
