That may not be accurate. Flying to rigs in the gulf, I seen trawling boats year round. I believe once you are a certain distance ' offshore' you can pull a trawl at anytime. On page 27 of the comercial regulations pamphlet, it states you may trawl in the federal waters year round, but need the federal permit. I guess the answer is, is it worth the time and money to trawl for your own bait, opposed to throwing a cast net, while the inshore zones are closed?
Since the report was posted in the 'Fishing in Shell Beach / Hopedale / Reggio in Southeast Louisiana' category, I assumed that he is talking about inshore Louisiana waters. Additionally, I really don't think anyone would be looking to pull a 10 foot test trawl out in the Gulf.
That being said, I agree that there are areas of the Gulf open to trawling year-round, I just don't believe it applies here.
Based on inshore/offshore WLF trawling maps, as soon as you enter the Gulf it is considered offshore making it legal to drag all year round. That is why the smaller trawl boats usually pile up just outside the passes on falling tide until inshore season opens. Just stay in state waters and you are good to go.
You cannot trawl during closed season.
