one month later, slight scar but nicely healed with the superglue trick
Eating Stingray? article on June trip & past weekend's report
Here's a pic from a month later to show how skye's right ear healed from the birthday accident.
In my article I talk about adding scallops to my gumbos. After doing some research i read of people using stingray meat to replace scallops which are pricey. I've never tried this yet, but soon will to compare. Has anyone tried cubed stingray meat to replace scallops? if so how did they taste and how did you cook them? I heard of people marinating them in apple cider vinegar and buttermilk. If its as good as what some people said i may start getting use out of hooking a big stingray afterall.
This past weekend I made a solo fishing fishing trip Sunday morning. Got out there and started hammering away. Had a nearly half a limit within 20 minutes on topwater with my biggest going 21” until the rain storms pushed me further East way out to Timbalier. I was hoping to fish there for a while, but with the weather closing in again I ran back to the marsh as soon as I could unable to fish at all. The patch of thunderstorms quickly blew over and had some clear skies for a while, so headed back towards Last Island. Unfortunately, with dodging storms I accidentally left the aerator off and all my finger mullets died. Ended up fishing sharks and bull reds with the dead mullets for a little while until more storms ran me off at 10am. None of the sharks were big enough to keep and no bullreds were feeding, but it was fun.
Cut the wings off the sing ray . skin like a catfish. Use a 1.5' /diameter steel cookie cutter to cut chunks out of the meat. Sautee w/ some lemon butter and garlic. Faux scallops.
Ive heard about this before but was not sure if the rays caught around here were the same ones used as scalop substitutes. If you try it, please let us know how it tastes?
Bring along some bolt cutters or something like that and just cut the tail off once you get that ray in the boat. I'd be willing to try some of that ray smothered down. Never afraid to try something at least once.
