Capt.,
Could you gives us a little better idea of where you hit the 'pipe'.
Were you between the wooden structure and island headed toward the pass?
Past the curve in the rocks on island or before.
Plenty of us run that route often and I'd like to do my best to avoid.
Thanks and glad no one was hurt.
You are on target. I was turning left out of the channel of pilings I believe near the last one on the left. The other boat I was following had pulled over to that wharf that is right there to pick up 2 people. He then turned and got on plane heading towards the pass on the inside of that wooden structure. I got on step following from around the last piling/channel marker but I also cut inside behind him to the south side of that structure. I would guess I was at least 75yds away from the structure. I was also in 6 ft of water as I glanced at my sounder right after we hit. I hope someone finds out what it is and more importantly to me WHO owns it. That would be interesting to know. Scary thing is Scott tells me he runs through there all the time wide open. I bet not any more. LOL
Capt. Ricky I was on a World Cat last week and we hit the same obstruction from your description of location, we had just minor gel coat damage thank God. The Gentlemen running the boat has been passing in that same area for over twenty years with different types of boats and never a problem. I wonder if it is concrete from the bridge demolition. Either way glade to hear no one was injured and the trip didn't get cancel.
kokopelli, The guy I followed said he also pass there all the time. Not sure if they did or not but back at his camp some family and neighbors were talking about going back out there with a cable or weighted rope between 2 boats to see if they could locate whatever it is. I know I won't pass on the inside of the wooden structure next time I'm out that way.
Thanks Capt. I have also been running that area for years.
Some of you may have seen a thread I started at the end of May when I hit something on Elmer's Island. The coordinates of this obstruction is
N 29 09.356 W 90 06.243
It looked like a large piece of concrete/rock in the surf on Elmer’s Island. It was NOT either of the sets of pilings in the surf, but between them...about 4.5 miles from Caminada Pass and about 100-150 feet from the beach.
DNR told me that after the oil spill booms were collected but thousands of pipes, anchors, etc holding the boom were not. They were just left where they sat.
There will be plenty more incidents such as these in the future. be safe.
OUCH!!!
