Electric Fishing Knife Needed

I am looking for a new electric fishing knife that will not break from Redfish and Drum. It seems every company nowadays is making cheap plastic shit. American Angler was decent with their MT3, but they went to plastic gears. Mister Twister is the worst. I went through 2 Mister Twisters in one day and swore to never use another.

What I want is an electric knife with all metal gears. Is this even possible to find?

Knife

'Hamilton Beach Electric Knife Set With Case $19.99' bed bath and beyond has them...you won't be dis-satified.....but no electric knife will go through the armor of redfish, snapper, etc... Electric for trout or skinning fillet's once deboned.

Good luck!

Cleaning Redfish

I got mine from Wal-Mart and its about 10 years old. I clean specks and reds with this knife all the time. The trick of cleaning Redfish with an electric knife is as followed.

1. Cut behind the head straight down to the back bone and stop.

2. Start from the tail and cut following the back bone to the rib cage ( Don't cut the rib cage) continue

cutting by following the rib cage to the head where you have first cut.

3. Grab the tail with one hand and grab the meat with the other hand and pull upwards and the meat will pull off of

the rib cage like velcro. The cut the meat off of the skin.

Give it a try. Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Proctor Silex = Hamilton Beach

I was in the same boat as I threw away three Mister Twisters before any of them reached 100 trout. Since then I have cleaned countless trout manually and have missed the speed and ease that an electric knife affords. Based on my research it seemed like Hamilton Beach was the best alternative but I went to Bed Bath and Beyond and all they had was a display model. After some more research I came across the following Proctor Silex knife on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00006IUX1/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00

Based on the exterior case, color, blade release, and trigger it is the same exact knife at Bed Bath and Beyond and since I am a prime member i received one today for a grand total of $12.30 ( a price that made it worth a shot). I have yet to use it but after inspecting the inside it does use a plastic gear like the Mister Twister but the design is such that it will be much harder to strip in my estimation (stripped gears is the problem that rendered my Mister Twisters useless as the blades would stop oscillating with the slightest hint of friction). I hope to have a better idea of how it works this weekend if the weather allows.

Follow Up

I cleaned 25 trout today with the knife and it worked well with one caveat...it got HOT. I was able to finish the fish without stopping or using gloves but am thinking at $12.30 a piece I will get one or two more and alternate using them when cleaning (especially when I have more than one limit to clean). If things change with regard to the knife I will report back. By the way I used the Mister Twister blades that come with the Saltwater Piranha since I have a few of them that never got much use and they worked great in the Proctor Silex.

Pyrana by Mister Twister

I've been using 'Pyrana' by Mister Twister for over 5 years now. I've cleaned well over 3,000 trout and over 300 redfish and I'm on the original blades! It works great. It has a long, curved blade that is very flexible. Can get it at Academy.

I haven't tried the prcctor silence-hamilton

I have tried everything else though. I have concluded that they all break and be prepared to go through 1 a year. I do buy replacement blades frequently, but the hang-up, like you said, is the gears. They strip out.

Metal gears sounds like a good solution.

Yeah, if you cut around the rib bones like one of the other posters said you can preserve a knife. To me though, it is easier to start right from under the pectoral fin and work towards the tail. Its super quick when you have a good knife. Those redfish Toe-nail scales and rib bones are certainly the death of filet knives.

Electric Knifes, Mr. Twister

This post really interested me, so here are my findings.
I too have been using Mr. Twister electric knifes for years. This year however I have went through 6 of them sense spring. I finally contacted Mr. Twister Company last Thursday 7/12/12 and after talking with the gentlemen who answered the phone was told that they are aware of the problem (s) and it was a result of a “bad batch”. He assured me that they have received a new batch and that the problem has been fixed. He said to check the date on the electrical plug for a date later then 3/12. I asked him when we would see the newer ones on the shelves. His response was when they receive orders. So I asked him what I should do with all the ones that keep breaking. His response was I can either bring them back from where I purchased them or send them to Mr. Twister for replacement of the new ones. My option is there should have been a recall on them but not sure how that works. Anyway I will keep returning them or try another brand till I am satisfied with the results I am looking for.
Hope this info helps.
