Fresh water sting ray
yea, common might not be the right word, but anytime the river gets around 3' in butte la rose, many saltwater species start showing up. If I had to guess, some crabs are being caught right now around the butte. I have also seen a flounder caught just south of I-10 a few years ago. Gafftops also show up in numbers on a low river.
that is an Atlantic Stingray, and yes that and Gaftop are 'saltwater' fish, but they can live happily in complete fresh water. Most saltwater fish can survive in freshwater but they need at least 15ppt salt water to spawn. I am surprised though that they made it all the way to Melville. the butte larose gauge says the river stage is 3.47 this morning. I guess with a low river stage them things can run up pretty far in the river.
