Don't think that you have to go out deep to surf fish. I grew up there and never went passed my knees to catch fish, unless I was trying to cool off. You can't drown like that. The fish are in the first trough. I used to walk out to where the tourists were fishing and cast back at the beach. Daybreak and dawn are the best times. At mid day, go take a nap and watch tv.
got to agree with boots, the fish will stay at a distance from you and because of that most people walk out to the second sand bar to fish the outside of it since the fish always seam to be just out of your casting range but when you move so do they.
wear tennis shoes for protection from crabs and there are occassionally sharp objects drifting along the bottom at times and you dont sink in the sand as much. a friend of mine even brings a folding chair at sits in it in 24 inch deep water to fish
you need to remember to stay less visible as you can by wearing dull colored clothes (nothing bright or flashy) and try not to make noise (no shouting or whahoo's) or move around too much (the fish will return to you) so the fish stay within casting range of you. also because of what i just explained stay away from the crowds if you can since most of the larger fish will tend to move away from the noise and commotion of a crowd of fishermen and they will all catch mostly smaller less warry fish. if you cant get away from them at least be on the outside edge and fish to the outside areas away from where they are fishing.
while you often dont NEED to go to the second sand bar to reach the fish sometimes if there is dirtier water then it might be just a little clearer there.
just be carefull as there are sharks around so dont tie your fish to your side, instead its better to have them on a floater next to you or have and inner tube to float an ice chest in to be safe and carry a sharp knife that is handy to get to fast in case a shark does grab your stringer you can cut it loose fast and stay out of trouble.
White Boots is correct, the good fish are in the first gully. You could stay on the beach and not even get wet to catch your fish. If you must wade BE SURE to shuffle your feet when walking, that way you'll keep from getting hit by a stingray. If you get hit....I promise you, you'll never forget it. DO NOT let children out past their waist...way too easy to drown, and it happens every year out there....Oh, and stay tyne hell away from the pass. ARRIVE ALIVE!!!
When you talk about the first trough or gully where is that located on elmer's island, I'm not familiar with elmer's island, the last time I went to elmer's island was like 20 years ago. Me and my little brother will be making a trip down there this weekend. What are they hitting on this time of the year. I appreciate all the information everyone has given previous to my comment. Thanks.
...if 'ya get swept off 'ya feet in a 'rip current' do not panic by trying to swim directly back to shore it will wear you out, best 'attempt' is to swim shoreward going with the current at about a 45* angle and hope 'ya make it back before the rip reaches the end of the trough and turns out to sea and 'ya end up in 'da Bay of Pigs !!!...cheers
The first gully / trough is right off the beach as you enter the water. Wade through it onto the first sand bar (about 10-15 yards). The gully will be thigh to waist deep. Get to the first sandbar, turnaround, face the beach and fish back into the gully and fish parallel the shoreline. If the fish are not in that gully, face offshore and fish out into the next gully but stay right where you are. DO NOT WADE OUT FURTHER. IF YOU DO YOU'RE POSSIBLY WALKING INTO /ON TOP OF THE FISH, AND RISK BEING SWEPT OUT
Start out on the beach before daylight and work your way deeper as the sun comes up.
If you are going to surf fish ,Invest in a do-net
Mesh bag on a white styrofoam ring. acadamey has them.
This has 2 uses . The sharks don't bother your catch in the bag and THE MOST IMPORTANT THING!
You Tie it to your belt on a 3' rope and if you get hung out in a rip tide you can drop everything and grab the ring and use it to FLOAT YOURSELF just like a life ring. If you can find a second ring to add to the first it will be even better.
Rod an reel is replaceable, you only drown once!
me
