Amite River = Asian Carp Sighting
Yesterday while sitting on my dock enjoying a lunch with my sister, there was one of them high dollar 35ft, twin engine open exhaust tunnel hulls making its way upriver , and really gunning on it. As the boat passed, the exhaust note ,altho sweet to my ears, rattled the inner chest like thunder. As I was checking out some eye candy on the back of the boat, I noticed the water on the other bank explode. At first I thought it was a gator after one the semi-tame ducks I have been feeding. But then I noticed it was a big Asain carp, as it came out of the water twice more after I saw the inital eruption of the water. The thing leapt twice, each time clearing the water by a few inches, but more than enough for me to make out that big round blunt head and a silver/metallic color to it. It looked to be 30-40 pounds, the thing was big and long. It reminded me of a Porpose the way it was leaping out of the water.
I found a dead one after the Bonne Carrie Spillway was opened last year.It was 30ish pounds.I reported it to wildlife and fisheries, who said they were being found all along the rivers down here now.
Not a good sign of things to come. This was a few miles below the French Settlement Bridge.
