Its been a while since I've surf fished but it's a hit and miss deal . Y'all know how accurate the weather men can be ! So if your going down for a week you may get one or two fishable days and if your lucky maybe more . Light winds are good from any direction but rarely do you get the ideal northerly winds during the summer .
If you have no winds at all it can be great for surf fishing but you also are plagued by the constant aggravation of gnats and sand flys !! Once I surf fished with only my nose sticking out the water and even then it was unbearable . For some reason from time to time the gnats are not there when the winds are calm . So IF you can get calm winds AND no gnats , I would call that perfect conditions !!
Good info but I would add that daybreak fishing is a must for the surf. I use to take my 3 sons there and fishing the many lights at night is great fun. Most of the trout are small but you the kids can have a good time and it is also cool. Free lineing a live shrimp under the lights has never failed me no matter where we fished.
i fished the pier tuesday night and it was blowing out of the southeast pretty good.the most bait and activity was on the windward side.the waves were breaking pretty good on the west bank of caminada pass and i doubt the surf side of the island would have been fishable.i think the current weather pattern is finally going to change toward the weekend or early next week.good luck on your trip.
Awesome! Thanks drew
