Yea man those bass were soo close to bein in my freezer as i type this, but they got the better end of the deal, i guess. It was a blast catching all those fish though. We fished in the henderson swamp part all up in the canals the whole time, i was wandering if anyone can tell me if the bigger bass are in the lakes such as Lake Bigeaux? it seemed like all the bass in the canals were smaller. Or are there even bigger fish out there??!
One of the most-exciting bass trips I've ever been on was at Henderson about 12 years ago. I was with Ken Sherman of Front to Back Boat Service, and we (OK, really he) caught 7-pounders off of almost every cypress tree just to the north of the interstate. The best five went (I kid you not) about 35 pounds.
And it's one of the places Bassmaster Elite Series pro Greg Hackney used to fish when he was going to LSU, way back in the day.
All that said, there was a serious fish kill during Gustav (I've got the photos to prove it), so I'm sure it took a real hit.
Flies, how bad was the grass?
Hey Mr. Andy best five fish weighing 35 pounds!? thats one awesome trip! all the fish i saw wer pretty small 12 to 13 inchers but those bass fought harder than any other bass ive ever caught. the grass was pretty bad in some places, but it was defintely fishable. i caught most of the nicer fish on a worm. do you think there are still bigger fish out there? or do you think the hurricane wiped them all out? and also how long does it take for all of those 12 to 13 inch bass to grow to over the 14 inch mark?
There are def. much larger fish. And in a year or tow most of those 12-13' fish are going to be livewell material if we don't have a big kill-off again. I've been fish henderson all my life and it has been a long time since i have caught so many fish. Not big but it's fun to just catch. Like ole boy said big fish are deep, and these fish are hammered on every day and hard on weekends so they have seen most baits several times if they are an older fish. NOw come spring when they are bedding you can hook them more often. Whet's making it soo good is the water levels we've been seeing. Lower water they stack up. on the points and under the grass beds closer to the canals. That's when the reports start flyin in because the fish can't spread out. It's a big place and a lot of people fish it.
hey pintail, when you say the fish are deeper how deep are we talkin? i fished in the canals most of the time but only in 5 feet of water and it didn't seem to get much deeper. all the deeper water seems to be around Lake Bigueax. and all that water is dirty dirty dirty. last sunday when i found clean water, i caught fish. and Lake Bigueax really isn't that deep anyway, maybe around 8 to 9 feet deep. how deep do you fish and how do you fish deep water out there for the big ones?
I've been waiting for those 13' henderson bass to grow for about 10 yrs now....
