I think it will be a very good season, lots of feed this year, and the delta should be open for hunting this year. The water level will go down. We just built a blind on the south end by stock landing in a savanna of wild millet.
Yea it was looking to be an awesome season with the amount of feed...I'm just wondering what happens when water sits on top of it for a couple of days...Lets hope it draws down as fast as it is going up.
I just hope it falls out quick and doesn't knock out all the grass like last year. Of course we had 12 feet or more just before season opened. From the looks of things it was going to be an abundance of feed. From the central part to the north end it looked better than I've seen in recent years. We even had a lot of the fox tail marsh grass that came up this year.
The problem we have right now is that all the rivers are extremely high. There is nowhere for the water to drain once it stops raining. So unfortunately the lake will be high for a while, thus killing all the great feed we had. The delta is good to go. They have harvested all their crops, so hunting will be allowed this year. The good thing about all the water is that the delta should hold large amounts of ducks making the surrounding areas look to have a promising season once the shooting there starts. If the Lake will come down to a decent level we might can salvage a decent year. Good Luck, and say your prayers for DRY weather!
The last report I had from some of my buddies was that the Diversion Canal gate was closed because Black River was backing up and that the water was running over the dam at Archie/TTowne. From years of experience, when it comes over at Archie we typically get lots of water on the lake before it goes the other way. Either way, I'll be there either in the marsh or in the woods.
The locks ARE closed and the water is rising 1" an hour. Current water level is 31.8. Time for a plan B.
38.5 and still rising with rain coming!!!
Pretty much ends the Catahoula Lake duck season.
