Inshore Fishing in Delacroix Island in Southeast Louisiana

Worst Marina Delacroix

Worst Marina Delacroix LA. How about this place. Went for a fisrt visit and LAST VISIT to Delacroix. Launched @ Serignes Landing. Here is the story. Not enough page here.
1. Bought Crockers and live shrimp. Told the bald headed gobber at the counter thanks and he looked at us like we were from Mars, no reply. Have a nice keep alive bait wells. One for shrimp and the other for crockers. 30% of all bait was dead in 30 min.
2.Purchased $30.00 of fuel at the dock. The pump stopped @ $15.00. Nicely asked for them to restart the pump to get the other $15.00. Went back in the store twice to explain that we only had half the gas we paid for.Would not listen and told us we had pumped twice. Crappy gas motor broke. Think the gas pump hose leaks gas in the water also.
3. Ramp too steep. Heavy boats with tandem trailers W/Out 4X4 would have trouble getting the boats out. Crappy launch pad!! One Truck in the fell in the water. Slippery ramp.

Complaints

It's OK to complain in writing but please do so where others can read it. if your launching fueling and fishing skills are as sharp as your typing skills its no wonder that those in the marina wouldn't acknowledge you.....

i think it's right now....... point taken!!!

To Capt. John L

Capt. like you that play on the internet. Others like Capt. Earnie are too busy to play. They are fishing and cleaning fish and getting ready for the next trip. Ones who play only play and not fish. Who really catches the fish with the pictures that you post on the internet?

Play and Play?

I catch ALL the fish, Dumpster. Then I let the customers hold them up so I can take a picture of them with the fish so I can "PLAY" on this computer all day instead of fishing, cleaning the catch and getting ready for the next customer! I have a team of Democrats down here in Buras that do all the cleaning of the fish, detailing the boat and getting things ready for the next customers so I can have plenty of quality "PLAY" time just to agrivate YOU!

To-NOLA FSHER

Not asking anyone to kiss my butt for service. With a 1.5 day trip we spent well over $200.00 for live bait launch fees and ice. That includes the $15.00 they cheated us out of. Do not think that we would have received a thanks ater we thanked them for their services. Do not even care. Being nice does not coast anything. NOLA fisher, sounds like you have been there also. Pepole at Brenton Sound Marina are nice. Never been to Campos.

learned my lesson

learned my lesson in Delacroix 10 years ago, never been back. Too many other good marinas and fishing areas to learn to deal with BS at the launch and deal with a shoddy ramp.

Capt John L fishes a whole lot better than he plays on the internet, too. "It ain't bragging if you can back it up." And he backs it up. He has also taught my family and I quite a few things over the past 6 or so years I've known him.

Delacroix

I launched there a couple of weeks ago and the guy picking up in front of us couldn't pull his boat up. Everyone was standing around watching, I ran over there to help and was standing on his rear bumper, a few others joined once I did. I was shocked that they were just standing around watching this guy spin out trying to pull his rig out of the water, friendly people down there.

One of my friends made this analogy about going to Serigne's for the first time:

NEVER pump water into your live well from right near the marina. Wait until you get into cleaner water before adding water from outside the boat. Make sure it is salty as well.

Dumpster

Looks like the Dumpster needs some spel-n lessins. Probably eats the dead shrimp out of the live well anyway along with the backbones out reds if I had to guess. I have been fishing Delacroix for 10 years and I love fishing there. My biggest issue with the island is why the people who live there think the bayou is their personal dumping ground, I don't understand??? As far as the residents go, their character just adds to the Delacroix experience. Can't get that just anywhere...can you??

Bait is Bait

If the bait was alive and kicking at the store, it's mostly on you to give them a new home they can survive in.

Most ramps in La. are too steep, and most also have a drop off out there somewhere to snag your trailer in low tides. This also usually happens in the dead of winter.

The gas business sounds screwy, and that's probably what motivated your hostility. That would chap me too.

im from delacroix and make my living off of the water and as for saying the locals use it as a dump is bull i dont and nether does most of the locals yes there is a few bad apples but dont ever put everone in the same category

i have hade to replace one lowerunit and the seals on another one becouse of people who come down to go fishing throwing there old fishing line in the water.

i seen a guy tying a stainless nut on his line at the gas pumps when he left the dock he threw it out let all of his line out and then cut it

so should i now say that all of you guys that come down to go fishing do the same thing becouse i have seen one man do so??

there is also a guy that owns a camp just past bayou gentilly that had a bunch of stolen crab traps in the back of his camp 3 of mine and about 15 or 20 that belonged to others from down there does that make all of the people that have a camp in delacroix thieves???

no it doesent!!!

so from now on dont include everyone from delacroix in your trash talk

well

well heres the problem, the reason that you probably had to go in there and ask for your gas 2 times, is because my uncle lionel is in the hospital as im typing this due to internal bleeding, and has been for over a week now. john and little william are catching live bait so willie has been running the launch solo, 1 guy running the pumps, regester, and counting bait isnt an easy thing to do, its easy to get mixed up with all the guys comming in there and being short handed. not to mention his grand mother died friday too, dont beleive me, their closed wedensday for the funeral servaces, check the obits in the paper. as far as your bait goes, i know you used the water from the bayou if they were dead in 30 minutes, cause thoes shrimp were put in there friday and had no problem surviving in the tank since then. as far as the steep ramp, nothing you can do about that, thats just how its made & the pumps dont leak in the water either, i get gas there everyday. not trying put any blame on dupster, but that was the situation for over a week now.

blackdeath- specks

i dont know if youve ever herd of a little storm called katrina, that took all but 12 houses of the 184 that used to stand on delacroix island? every time the water comes up, more debris comes off the banks and out of the marshes into the water because it hasnt been cleaned up. i cant tell you how many ice bags have run my motor hot from getting cought on the lower unit, they dont come from the locals cause we get our ice for free n it dosnt come in a bag. already went through 1 lower unit due to fishing line just like lucky man. dont blame the trash on everyone. everytime i pull up to the wharf on low tide i kick up some kinda debris.sure there are some that do litter, but not all of us, i bet you threw trash out of the window of your truck a time ot 2. no one is innocent.

kimbo... my aunt joan is a rough ol gal that dont take no shi* from anyone if you get to know her, she is one of the nicest people you could ever meet, but ill bet you dont have the testicular fortitude to tell her that to her face.

Delacroix

I guess I should have said I don't understand why a few bad apples on the island use it as a dump. I will add that I fished there pre-Katrina and you have to admit that some people used the far side of the bayou to dispose of the rigging, nets and crab traps. I think we can all do a better job of not littering.
I am still amazed at how fast that place bounces back after the storms, even though you never know when the next one is coming, I truly hope we get a break for a long while.
I don't understand why people like the "Dumbster" even go fishing with such a bad attitude. You can look for the bad or the good in every day, it's up to you!! If I had to guess, his wife probably bought him the boat and told him to leave on Friday and not come back till Sunday night just to get him out of the house.

its not trash

black death specks, i know you probably dont know this but we all use the other side of the bayou to store our traps and rigging & nets, every year, we go across the bayou for the season and put our stuff back on the boat. the only problem is that the weeds grow over everything so fast that when we go over to get our stuff we have to get all the pea vines off of it, probably why it looks disguarded & over grown, but beleive me it isnt. your right about bouncing back, we wont back down, nothing like being home. katrina did take alot of us off the island. many just moved right up the road into the levee protection system, there getting too old to keep putting up with storms and flooding every year, 80% of the island residents were 60 and over, too old to try to rebuild their life again in a place so prone to storms. hey bird dog, do you know my dad?

I'm sure the "Droopster" is basically a good guy, he probably just had a bad day. He did say that his motor broke from the bad gas...not sure how that happens?? I just hope he doesn't have to write for a living, 'cause he'd be in trouble. Everytime I go to the island I am always amazed at the high dollar camps going up. Makes you wonder how much longer the "residents" can afford to stay. I know my guide moved after Katrina.

The problem was they spotted you as a Cheevo. I used to work with a couple of guys from down there and thats what they told me I was. Good people down there though, but they don't take no chit. Don't be so sensitive, there is great fishing down there don't give up on it cause you had a bad day. Don't have such thin skin. But if you rolled down there with your fancy rig, dedicated fishing shirt and $100 glasses you stuck out. All that don't catch fish and they no it and thats why your a Cheevo! If we're "Cheevo's" what do they call those pros that are down there now pre-fishing for the Red Fish Cup...super Cheezo's. Cause all those stickers look pretty cheezy to me. Seems like they take great pride in being as arrogant as possible. I wonder, do all those stickers really make you catch more fish. Can a red fish see those stickers under water and realize that he now has no chance, just give up and jump in the boat if your 26 & 3/4" long.

Why am I a cheevo? you ask

BDSpec, don't get me wrong I'm a cheevo too, acording to the Larose brothers anyone from up the road is a Cheevo, I think in spanish it means goat-someone who comes from the highland. I think its funny, but whats really funny one of the guys that told me I was a cheevo actually got stuck with that as his nickname in the kitchen, the whole restaurant called him Cheevo that used to really chap his @ss! When someone would mess up it became known as "bustin' a cheevo" and still is called that to this day.. Just a funny note.
And I'm sure they have worse names for all of the pro's with the stickers on their boats and I'm sure they get the funny looks also.

hey whitebeans,them banjos

dont start playin till duck season, watch where you pull your pirouge up!! LOL

the dukerts bought that house from mr. vj, i grew up in an old house that was 4 houses down from them, it was an L shaped house with a rusty roof before katrina. only the cement stairs are left in the yard now. then we moved away from there and went about a mile further down the island.

chefront, most of the martinezs' used live right by the reggio bridge. the only other ones that lived at the island before katrina that i can remember back to the mid 80's is my paw paw henry martinez, my mom lisa uncle rene and aunt michelle, his brother philip and his son kile. my paw paws house was right across the road from the carraly bayou, the little canal that meets the island bayou right up the road from lake leary, it has a carved wooden door with an anchor and a steering wheel on it..

I'm surprised people think that they skimmer frames, mullet nets, and traps on the other side of the bayou are junk, it always seemed pretty obvious to me that it was gear being stored for the appropriate season. I think people don't get that on the island its still about commercial fisherman who fish to live rather than us cheevos who recreate down there. Some days things are pretty busy down there and your aunt is pretty matter of fact then but I don't think they would ever sell anyone bunk bait. On the other hand if you have a GCCA sticker or hat on don't expect too much courtesy since from the Islanders Point of view your trying to put him out of business.

serine's

I just spent the last few months building the last new camp that is over the water before you get to serene's. I spent two months down there off and on working. Before that I had never been to delacroix. The first time I met Mr. Lionel I told my friend that he was not a very friendly guy. He told me " he doesn't live at the end of the world because he likes people" .After about 6 trips the old man wrmed up to me. He gave me some good advice and even some extra bate. I am soory to here about him being inthe hospital though.

yea

you hit the nail on the head. i worked there for about a year, and beleive me when someone gives her some crap she will give it back, that went for anyone from the island too, even i got a good toung lashing a few times. but she really is a good person, if anyone is married you all know how women can get, she really isnt like that everytime people go there like some would have you beleive, and she rarely is even down there anymore, i cant remember the last time she was. i think uncle liones is gonna come home on friday, he was pritty upset today, he had to miss the funeral but he has a slipped disk now in his back, but hes a tuff ol guy, he'll bounce back.
i guess you really cant blame people for not knowing about all our stuff on the other side of the bayou, they really dont know, and it is easy to make assumptions when the weeds grow over your gear and make it look like junk.
ive met quite a few good friends who are cheevos, LOL. but your right about the cca stickers, that will get you some dirty looks whereever you go down here, but hey what can you do. ive got some good friends in the cca, just to hope to catch some tagged fish for a big prize, i just call them cheevos too. its kinda like racial profiling, like every sport wants to take our living, its just not so, but how do you know what someone thinks of you if you dont know them. and if you do have a cca sticker youll get thoes looks whereever you see a commercial fisherman, they just dont like the cca,for obvious reasons, but nothing we can do about it, that fight long is over, and im sure that members of cca and their leaders probably dont think about it that much, but commercials still have a bad taste in their mouth over it(the older guys anyway) and grudges last forever. i was just a kid when thoes laws were passed. but its still its small town ways, everyone can pick out the stranger... kinda like mayberry. and the place was so far away from everything, the islanders were so independant, it was like its own little world away from everyone and everthing, even had grocery stores doen there when i was a kid. and movit theater , a few bars and a skating rink when my paw paw was a kid.when i was a kid we would go get into trouble or into fights... no one would even see the cops, you didnt have to worry about getting sued, they would just go tell your paw paw n he would be waiting for your ass when you got home, now things have changed, its not that place anymore, and no one from down the road likes change.

End of an era

KJS I remember seeing the Island as a kid and thinking what a crazy but neat place it was. It seems like I remember being at the Mellerine's (sp?) back in the early 90's when they were refusing to launch boats with CCA stickers (amazingly that was a long time ago now so the details are a little fuzzy). Its sad what Katrina did to all the little towns down there. I remember how creepy it was heading down the road past all the bare pilings at first now sometimes I drive through and its hard to remember what it was like before. Its sad.

Sweetwater Marina

Launch at Sweetwater Marina. I don't know what amenities he has setup yet, but I normally get the stuff i need before i get there and then just launch. Capt Jack is a great guy and the launch is prolly the best around.

Hey DDR, KJS, & October,

eye of red

its not a resturant or anything like that. its actually has a bar in it and a hot tup but it belongs to the guy who owns the camp across the street, its his personal party spot, i talked to him a few times, hes a nice guy he knows uncle lionel real good. we didnt know what tagfu ment either so there was an inside joke about what it was. lionel is still in the hospital, willie said they might let him out tomorrow? still dont know. he went trawling early last week, got back about 4 hrs later said he was really dizzy & nausiated, and went strait to the hospital. i think they found like 7 intestinal pollups (spelling) and a few were bleeding really bad. he stayed in the hospital over a week, got out for 1 day and went back in with a slipped or ruptured disk in his back.

lanco, when the net ban passed i remember at first they wouldnt even let any sports come down here for a few weekends, everyone from hopedale, shell beach yscloski and the island had a road block at the junction food store making people turn around, even had the news crew down here. as far as the storms go, we get flooded every few years, from the even small tropical storms . when we were kids it was alot of fun to play in the flood water, we couldnt wait for it to come over the road.i was only 5 years old but remember sitting on my dads shoulders after hurrican juan, comming out of the house with chest high water. used to be everyone talked about hurricane betsy, i even have some photos of the island after it, some of the houses floated across the bayou, but the people put them back together where they went. katrina just blew everything apart. but when you live in a place like this , its just the gamble you take, if something happens just rebuild everything, no place like home i guess.

TAGFU & Lionel

October,
I got it! That's a classic! Funny stuff right there. Yea, KJS lets keep them wondering. Nice place.

KJS,
Keep us posted on Lionel. Our prayers are with him and the entire family. I should have responded to your previous post about the diversion. I could not agree with you more. People who think the freshwater diversion work should see what has happened to that marsh. What a crime! For the record, I'm a sport but I love the island as much as you guys. When my time is done, my ashes will be there. How are ducks looking for you guys this year?

Ducks?

Any of you guys from down there know of any duck ponds that are open to lease? If they wouldn't mind leasing to a cheevo, I'd be interested I sure would like a place kind of close to home to shoot ducks. Thanks Chef RonT
