I'm curious what kind of boat also? Doesn't sound like anyone from our little group of capt's. I could be wrong though. I hope you remember the boat. Did you settle in a fair distance away and either troll in or let the wind push you in? Sounds like someone may have been a little agitated not catching many fish. How did you like the "DU"? Just wait till you get out there on a good day. Good Luck, Capt. Ricky
Sounds like you were good. The problem I see when I fish Dularge is when fishing the birds, boats run full speed and try to stop 30 yards from the birds. Follow Capt. Ricky's instructions on trolling up or using the wind and you are good to go. I know a few of the guides down there and they wouldn't have done that. If you ran up on them they might think your an idiot but they are professionals and they act like it.
Captain Ricky and T Miller are right. I have been around many of the Dularge Guides and they have been considerate. If one of them threw fits like that the customers would not return. We all make mistakes on the water that makes people mad. Just always try your best to be a sportsman no matter what. I have fished the birds many times without any interference and still the specks chase the shrimp up for a minute and then nothing. Good Luck next time and remember we have to share.
i didnt even think to look what kind of boat. i stopped way farther from the birds than he did and trolled in. and i didnt even really get close enough to fish the birds well because i didnt want him to think i was trying to run up on him. He may not have been a guide but he was in a 24'ft blue and bay boat and had a ponytail if that helps. and as far as following him. like i said i was in a 15ft bass boat. lol tops out at 32mph with 2 ppl in it. lol i think i ended up outcatching them anyways because all they did was chase birds and catch some dink fish then it looked like they started going for reds on the bank.
It can be a tough job to be a guide especially this time of year with fronts and winds and tough conditions but that does't give anyone the right to leave their manners at the dock. 2 or even 3 boats can work a group of birds if done right. I,ve been cutoff and blocked on birds and bayous by both guides and weekend warriors. Perhaps a course in manners should be a part of all our training. One suggestion is that a lot of times when the birds and the Potlickers have gone the fish are still there. Don't be so quick to leave an area often the fish and the birds will regroup! Good Luck! Captain Tom
only those lacking fishing skills will fish the birds grasshopper.
translation: if you need to fish the birds to produce fish in numbers, you havent mastered the techniques needed to be a stand alone trout fisherman. Bird fishing is for easy limits of small trout, best for showing the kids a good time.
The funnist thing I have ever seen is 4 grown men in a $45k bayboat pull up to a flock of birds where they can throw a bare hook and catch a limit of 12-14 inch trout. this is fishing? Go figure.
if ya'll got there at the same time and both stopped a good distance away from the birds.. your in the clear, that dude was just an Ahole from what it sounds like. But the sad part is that this story probably doesn't surprise anyone who read it. I just don't see why spec fishing is SOO competitive. I've fished for bass, sacalait, and bream all of my life and just recently started fishing saltwater 3-4 years ago.. and MANN boats will run on top of you while you fish. I know people who have lost anchors and even their corks due to dumbies trying to chase birds.
Thanks "W" I just wanted to know because Tim La Fleur is starting to venture into my neck of the woods. lol In all seriousness, I have no problem with people fishing the same flock of birds with me as long as they are smart about it. Last Fall 1/4 of Sister Lake had birds diving, there must have been 40 boats there.
Nothing wrong with a limit of 12-14" specks, they taste better than the big ones in my opion and if you use light tackle, put up a good time catching them. fisherofthebass, you right about that, have been in a bay all alone drifting and have had boats go out their way and pass with in casting distance, just to see if you catching fish and you surely do not want to set the hook when they are passing.
I dont mind fishing birds with others. It's just when they go to thumping, bumping slamming lids, dropping stuff in the bottom of boats & chunking anchors makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck! When I fish, I fish in stealth mode. It's almost like Deer hunting. Specks are spooky creatures. When I've busted my hump trying to be quite & someone ROLLS on in & "olympic tosses" their anchor or slams lids I just wanna scream AAHHHHHHHHHH! 2 or more boats on birds I'll just pass 'em on up. Not for Me.
Some people are just @sses though. But I would have told him he was #1 with me before he left!
Quick story. I fish the same waters as "W". One day I was with a friend fishing birds in his 14ft alum. boat w/40hp. and this Bay Boat/Green Kenner (it's probably 24ft)who thinks he owns the water, kept running through the birds. Well the next day we went back out and guess who was out also. Well, I told my buddy that I wanted to confront the guy and he started laughing at me. I was not happy and he said, "Just Watch." We left a set of birds and drove away from the other boat. We stopped in the middle of the lake no birds except the set we left. The "Green Kenner" starts heading to the birds, my buddy is laughin his a$$ off. I didn't get it untill he showed me a empty bread bag. That boat fished those birds for at least 45mins. They caugh one fish. Don't get mad, get some bread. LOL
don't get too close and show him the same courtesy as you want him to show you! but some people think they own the water? well they don't, period!!! you have as much right to fish as they do, even if they make their living fishing!!! personally, i hope it wasn't a guide, because these guys are suppose to be professional and i think they wouldn't do something stupid like this? whoever this guy was, he is and always will be an idiot his entire life, no matter who he is!! should of got his number and called wlf, even if it would not have done any good, just make a report in case he does it to other people and they call wlf. after so many calls, maybe they mite burn him for being that idiot? if nobody calls, he will keep getting away with it, until he runs into the wrong guy, then he will take care of him!! then nobody will have a problem with him anymore and that's great, give the man a reward!!! remember there are more idiots in the world, then sane people , that's why the world is in the shape it's in, just my opinion!!!!!! if you disagree, will welcome an opinion, please!!!!
I never fish by the birds, I fish away from everyone else use a plastic toy bat and cut the end and throw some fresh shrimp about 30 ft. from your boat with it. Wait for fish to come to you. or fish around the entrance of canals or channels from an open area of water where there is plenty bait and larger fish.
just repay the favor next time you see him fishing. lol
