Inshore Fishing in Pointe a la Hache in Southeast Louisiana

Boat Maintenace

I recently inherited (for the price of the new motor) an 19 foot 2001 Charles Leonard center console that rolled 3 times on the trailer and was held by the anchor line through Katrina in Pointe a la Hache. My 62 year old uncle who has Parkinsons wanted to pass on this boat. I have always maintained my boats so that 30 minutes check and I'm gone. It has been gone through totally with a 2006 150 E-tec
and a new McClain galvanized trailer. It runs upper 50's and gets 5-6 mpg. A four foot chop is nothing for this beast. My question is what is the best way to maintain the unpainted aluminum hull and trailer in a saltwater environment. Should I polish and wax the hull or just don't worry about it? I use plenty of "Saltaway" after each trip. As much as I enjoy driving this boat, its an emotional issue that my uncle sees that it will be around for years. Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated and when you see this scared from the storm boat named Kat-5 give me a wave.

are you kidding?

Spec Chaser dont worry you dont have to change the name of your boat as the nasa website has it making landfall as a category 4.
"Katrina initially made landfall at 6:10 am CDT south of Buras, Lousiana along the Mississippi delta as a strong Category 4 storm.

But Point la hache is down there a ways so it was nice and strong down there.

Boat Name

Yes, I'm amazed that you ask a simple question and someone will post something stupid. I could name it Kat-8746 if I wanted to. It's mine, it has a story and anyone who was at Pointe a la Hache after the storm would understand. Just looking for any help to maintain something that survived such a horendous event. The name will stand and will be fishing for as long as I can put it in the water. This next generation has no clue. I'm sorry for their loss.

Speck Chaser, your e-mail was impressive. Glad you got the chance to restore the hull. I know you're proud of it. As far as maintaining the hull, Salt-A-Way is a great product to remove the oxidation but a good coat of quality wax will not only give lustre to the hull but will make it move easier. BTW, I used to buy Salt-A-Way at Delta Hardware on Flourissant Hwy. Where do you find it now? Good luck with your hull.

4 ft chop???

Hey Spec Chaser, I got a hurricane boat, too. Mine came from the other side of the state, though. I just got finished restoring it...Hopin to put her in the water on some redfish and specks this weekend. My boat is big so it has really large WHITE sides, so I am naming mine WHITE TRASH!! I happen to love the name but most of my friends (the female ones especially) are not very fond of it...What do you guys think....and BTW 4 footers ain't no chop!!! My boat is a 25' Mako w/ twin 200's and my arse is turnin around from a 4 foot chop!!!
