Offshore Fishing in Venice in Southeast Louisiana
first black grouper
After leaving at 3am to get an early start on the rigs, we had trailer problems on highway 23, twice. The first the winch strap broke, and we repaired it. Then the U-bolts on one of the axles broke. Two and a half hours later we were on our way again. We finally got out of Venice Marina about 9 am, and headed to the rigs. The current was ripping, and it took 24 oz. to keep us on the bottom in 250" of water. Mike was fishing spectra and he was putting a hurting on the red snapper up to 12#. After limiting on the snapper, we moved to another rig and landed a couple of black grouper. I got my first ever. We stopped at a mooring buoy on our way to the next rig to replenish our live bait. Then the battle began with the reef donkeys. The first one broke the 80# leader after a short fight. The second one ran me into the rig, and it was over before it started. The third time was a charm, and I got my first AJ in the boat. We played with the AJ's for an hour giving everyone on the boat a chance to land one. The longer we stayed the smaller they got. It ended up being a great day on the water, w ith good comradre and two more first for The Bear.
