I've seen brotulas at rodeos and they have a tail that comes down to a point, as seen in this link.

Here is a link to a particular species of hake caught in deep water and if you look at the tail, etc. its a similar shape to what you caught. http://www.thejump.net/id/spotted-hake.htm
If my memory is correct, hakes, brotulas, etc. are all in the cod family, and while I've never personally eaten a hake or brotula, they are suppossed to be excellent.
It is a spotted hake (Urophycis regia) it is in the Phycidae family very closely related to the codfishes family. Usually found in 100+ fathoms, but young will move inward during winter months. 16 inches in about the extent of there growth, so this one appears to be a mature adult. Table Fare= good-excellent, similiar to codfish.
Might be a tilefish?
