2nd Split Opener Report

Dates hunted December 16 & 17 2017:

After what were really good conditions for duck hunting Saturday we only shot 2 ducks for the hunt, 1 teal and 1 dosgris. Today we shot 1 pintail, 1 bufflehead, 1 dosgris.

We SE Louisiana duck hunters are in trouble. I don't recall of such poor results since I have been hunting in the area I have been for 25 years. It is really bad. Teal are nearly gone, hardly any greys and even the dosgris are spotty. We have plenty feed in our area so its not that.

Usually we bang them up this weekend and start the steady decline of production until we get to the finish line. Well, we got the finish line results this weekend. I am scratching my head on this one. Usually I post videos of the hunts over the weekend but can't do it due to the lack of action.

The only thing that saved the weekend was we launched the big boat and busted up the specks with three of us limiting out with 75. Plastics deep under a cork did the trick.

Hey Miley, results are definatly varried across the Coastal marsh. I had my craziest action of the season this weekend, even better than opening weekend. Although it was mostly teal, we still killed a decent amount of greys this weekend. We killed 52 ducks out of my blind between Sat and Sun. But, it would not suprise me if next week the ducks have moved out of the area where they were this weekend. I feel your pain, even though I have had good hunts. Other close by areas of Delacroix were void of ducks. Some fished today because they didn?t kill Saturday. The duck situation is changing and not as consistent across the marsh and throughout the season as it used to be. All we can do is keep trying and a limit of trout is not a bad plan B. Good luck the rest of the season.

Proud Pop,

Happy to read you are shooting some ducks and I hope you keep on busting them up. We are going to stay at it for sure and hope our luck changes but I am not very optimistic for this year. It is a very strange year for the ducks for us because we work hard to make things right, good duck blinds, lots of decoys all to increase our chances of getting ducks to come close for a shot. When we look into the skies now we just don't see a lot nor do we jump up many on the way to our lease. Been doing this long enough to know it could all change in a day.

On the issue of would be poachers I am always nice and polite to them if it happens the first time because people do get lost or are part time hunters who don't prepare properly. It would be a different if the same people show up a second time.

I'm 41, grew up hunting Catahoula Lake. Moved further south 15 years ago and started hunting rice fields between Cheneyville down to Opelousas. I leased some land in the Prarie Ronde area this year. Plenty of food and places to rest for the ducks. No pressure. We have killed 3 ducks all season. The last few years have not been very good, but this has by far been the worst year I've ever duck hunted. And I know I'm not the only one. I have a buddy that has a lease that borders Rockafeller. I have been hunting with him twice and we limited out on greys both times. Nothing fast and heavy, just being patient and picking off 2-3 at a time. From what I read about the aerial suvey that's where the largest concentration of ducks in the state are. I've read that there are no ducks in North Louisiana, and Arkansas is having a very down year as well. I've been trying to figure this out my entire life. All I can do is make the hole accomodating, and sit and wait, lol. I just hope the ducks pile in the last few weeks of the season, but if that push of cold weather didn't push the ducks down, I'm not gonna get my hopes up too much. I'm optimistic, but damn.

Luckily, and I mean extreme luck, for me I managed a very nice greenhead and pretty hen green wing teal and busted my butt in the process but dat's what it typically takes hunting 100% Public Land, like me and Bayoubob do.I did see some hope yesterday in the form of not only mallards but also handful of nice flocks of greys and hunting Public Land, especially on Openers of both splits is always a wildcard and just yesterday had huge flock of greys wanting to scope out my smallish spread(never use more than about 12-16 decoys in smallish ponds, especially in Second Split)and group of guys S of me,probably real close to Lake P,were blasting away and hope dey cashed in on some greys as there were a few possible late-migraters flying and with any luck,my Second Split might bring some decent hunts with it!!

I tend to agree that Surface-drive boats might allow access to areas that typically do not receive too much pressure(simple solution-hunt areas like me that allow only outboards and no surface drives-ya work ya butt off but if ya good and sometimes lucky,ya reap some rich rewards).Had I stayed home yesterday, would have not shot quality ducks and scouted for next few hunts.Guys,it is quite simple,go where the ducks wanna be vs where you want to be or where you want them to be and LA has so much free Public Land it is ludicrous to spend money(unless ya either want to or have to like Guide Services as illegal in LA to guide on Public or Federal Land)!!!Love targeting greenies when de pickings are slim and they typically respond or just go where you have seen em,not all dat hard but ya gotta work to get to remote ponds where these ducks have not been pressured or been called at,harassed by Surface-drives,etc!!!

Just a few more comments about the season. It all depends on location. Some people are having the best season they can remember. Some have a great 2-3 week stretch then struggle for the next week or two. I had to move about 5 miles to another location this past weekend but it worked out with my best shooting of the season. I know if some that are giving up for the rest of the season and will just fish the weekends now.
As far as the surface drives, I can see that as a problem so are the 24 ft redfish boats that are all over the place all day. They are back in the skinny water as well spending all day sight fishing the reds. The main problem in Delacroix and other marsh areas is that there are no more dead ends and one way in/out ponds. What used to be my favorite pond(one way in and out) is now a short cut for every boat heading out to fish the winter hot spots. So all boat traffic not just surface drives are an issue. The marsh is so broken all boats can go anywhere.
And as far as public land, very few would be happy with Mandevillan’s results. Killing a couple ducks a hunt and some DNF days are unexceptable for them even if you have a few limit days. What is a good day for some is not worth the trouble for others.
All you can do is go every chance you can. Hunt the weather days and change what is not working. If that doesn’t work, it may be time to fish. Been there done that! God luck to all the rest of the season.

Proud Pop,Coulda not said it any better,Bayoubob and I are true die-hards willing to bust it,though gotta admit using my Southfork with pirogue rack has virtually eliminated about 90% of my aerobic exercise!!I am more than happy to emerge with a few quality ducks an have learned over the course of many, many years of hunting what I consider a gem of all gems, dat ya count ya blessings, hide extremely well, hope ya aint got Eli Haydel,Jr blowing as hard as he can not dat far from ya and bust dem greenies every chance ya can as there are few greys where we hunt and I can't wait for my favorite mid-week hunts!!!Since when has it been easy hunting ducks de ole-school way, probably de way ya Dad hunted and I absolutely love my pirogue blinds especially later in the season when ducks get wary of spots close to edges of ponds and I out-fox em by staging up on tiny islands no where near shore!!!Adapt, adapt, adapt or chase fish til Turkey Season!!!

Mandevillian, now feeling ole after yesterday's hunt but giving de body a few day's rest, then back at dem greenies!!!
