Re: Honey Island Swamp

Deer hunting use to be decent in Pearl but is steadily declining from what I see and the regulars I talk too. With that being said if your a good hunter and work at it you can get a deer or two. Hunting was a lot better when they use to plant plots and they had good briars. Almost all good browse is gone and turned into mostly saplings. Bedding areas have decreased drastically in last 5 years and a large portion of forest floor has been over taken by Chinese tallow trees which are extremely invasive and provide no feed or positive attributes and areas of these invasives are constantly getting bigger. I rarely ever see anything in these tallow forested areas. Even the hog hunting has significantly decreased in Pearl due to onslaught to remove them. The people who hunted there enjoyed the hogs because deer opportunities are so rare and few. The excessive hunting of the hogs at end of last season by all means and trapping and running dogs and extremely early season hunting with squirrel and dove guns has removed lots of the smaller hogs. But their system while removing majority of small hogs has left most of giant boars. These boars still eat all the food but are totally nocturnal, bed by themselves in deep thickets and are almost unkillable. The dogs will get tore to pieces by them and this super breed of hog created runs along ways instead of baying up. In order to improve deer hunting they would need to create some bedding areas by removing some tallows and other less desirable species to invigorate the forest again.
