Bass Fishing in South Central Louisiana

Late winter/ early spring bass fishing techniques

Hey guys i fish mainly in the spillway for bass, sac a lait, and occasionally bring some friends along to catch boat loads of bream. I havent really fished the area too much this time of year but i don't have classes on tuesday or thursdays so ill be out there twice a week starting next week. I mainly fish Bayou Pigeon and run all over the area, from murphy lake, to big pigeon, all the way to Grand Lake. What are you guys' winter bass fishing patterns for the spillway? during the summer i was doing very well pitching red shad worms up to the bank and structure around the bank and also catching a few fish on small shad colored crankbaits. Also When will the fishing begin to turn on out there with the water starting to rise?

Spillway

The water is rising, cold and muddy. Not good. IF, ,,,you can find some clearer water, jigs are a good choice. The only boat trailers at Pigeon landing have been commercial fishermen and hunters. Sorrel, Belle River, Adams, about the same. No one is basically fishing in the spillway now. Most are on the Verret side are in the marsh,,,,, and the reports are not great there either. If someone is catching them, they are tight lipped about it.

Spillway

I went to Sorrel yesterday. I found some clear water in the back; however, not one bite. The water is very high. The paper shows 6.9 ft. but I can tell you it is a lot higher. You are going to have to go fish Verret or Jack Millers area. Very high....As soon as it starts to drop, you can book it I will be the first one there. I check it hourly....Cant wait!

River stages

If you type in Mississippi river stages in google, the top site that comes up will be river stages through louisiana along the mississippi river. I use the baton rouge gauge to check the levels because I'm pretty sure that's the closest gauge to that area. Maybe some of the other fellas on here may know a better gauge to use, baton rouge my personal preference.

River Levels

Flies - You want the Grand Lake reading aswell as the Sorrel reading to be no higher then 6.5. I won't post the 'magic number', I'll let you figure that out for yourself.

Don't sweat it Flies, i'd emailed you thru the site about the cooler you had for trade. Also, I ran to Grand Lake last Saturday to check my hog trap. Water is high enough that we went there via Williams Canal then South thru the lake and back to the landing thru the piling canallil pigeon. Didn't see anything but high (and still rising) muddy water. Good luck if you go.

Last sunday

I launched out of dorions (spillway side) last Sunday and worked my way around as it was only my 2nd trip out there in 2 years. Caught 1 on a beaver pitching cypress trees and caught 3 more on a floating black/gold rogue only 1 keeper. Clear water is every where's down there but it was avg bout 58 degrees. I work this weekend so ill be back put there next weekend if we don't get and major rain falls. The north wind has been pushing the water out continuously since Monday. I don't like fishing the pigeon area until the water is out of the woods and I don't know what that magic number is. Good luck!
