Pearl River WMA interrupted by warden

Some friends and I went teal hunting in the Pearl River WMA last Fri, Sat, and Sun. On both Sat, and Sun, at approximately 20 min after sunrise the game warden drove his surface drive through our decoys and up the the boat to do a routine check. On Sat. the warden checked us then set out tearing through our decoys got lost in the marsh, stuck his boat for about 10 min then tore back through our hole costing us about an hour and a half of prime hunting time. On Sun. there was a diffrent agent but just as much of a jerk, he ran directly over our decoys turning one over and severing one from the weight. he then preceded to run the bow of his boat into our motor, and on his way out he passed through our hole twice. on his second pass he decided to stop about 70 yards directly in front of us and work on his motor for about 30 min.
I can't come close to expressing my rage I have been hunting the PRWMA for 4 years now and never had an experience like this. I plan on voicing my concern to the LDWF even though I know the most I will ever get is the run around from them. I just wish I had those two agents names.

Sorry you had that experience. Unfortunately, I think part of their training is to act like that. No regard for the people that pay their salary.

regulation

well i just dont undrstand checking in the middle of a hunt. i know hunting has to be regulated because some pleople abuse it, but check at the launch or on the river as people come back in. this way if they have done something wrong you can catch them. If they check a boat first thing in the morning then are gone by 10:00 AM what are they regulating. They might as well be giving people a free pass to do whatever they want for the rest of the day.

It's a shame!

Its ashame how law enforcement wants you to hate them. I get on you tube and watch these idiots acting like superman, it enrages me! I hate that the few law enforcement agents that act like gentlemen have to suffer for all the rests' behavior. I mean really, why do they think we have no respect for them and make fun of them. I really considered getting commisioned as a reserve just so i could be on their above the law level and tell them off when they get on their power-trips. Sorry you had to experience what I'm sure all of us have experienced at some point from law enforcement. Sadly it more than likely will not be your last experience.

If they are paying their own salary (presumably through license sales), then I would like to see them interrupt their own hunts. But we know we will never see that.

People forget all the time that PEOPLE give the government power. Law enforcement (including you JB) need to wake up every morning and thank God that we the people grant you the power to enforce the laws upon us. Abusing this power is not acceptable. The OP's story is just one more example of abuse of power we are experiencing more often these days.

The hunters in the OP did not deserve to have their privilege crapped on by some law dawg trying to be a tough guy. And law enforcement wonders why people resent them...

right or privelege

Why does it matter? JB just because a game warden pays taxes doesn't give them the right to abuse their power. Doesn't matter if they are working for free or if I don't pay a cent in taxes. They have a job to do so do it with respect and in a manner that they would want it done if they were on the receiving end.

Destroying a persons hunt is bad enough but destroying their property is on a whole other level. Isn't there some code of conduct they are suppose to abide by?

Years ago myself a friend and his dad were blackpowder hunting off wastehouse on the east pearl.I had to climb down my tree and show my license just a half hour after daybreak. The warden checked my friend and his dad as well. The same warden checked us again the next day in the same place he had to recognize our boat and should not have ruined our hunt 2 days in a row. On the 2nd day i asked could i just drop my license down to him and he said no

I also got checked saturday. the agent was professional he came into the pond check everyone. he saw us knock down a duck on his way in and picked it up for us so we didnt have to move. He said they were checking people while they were hunting because of the amount of dead wood ducks they were seeing on the ponds after the first weekend. So thank your fellow hunters who cant tell the difference between a woody and teal in the air. Not to mention the people who start shooting 15min before safe light you know they cant tell at that time.

HUH????

motorboat, Mike, lorman - In no way did I defend the way the GW acted. To me the 'we pay your salary' is just as much bull as the 'you're just jealous' arguement.

I take offense to people that think that public employees should cowtown to people because 'I pay your salary.'

There are plenty Law Enforcement Officers that abuse their power and treat people wrongly. But, just because you 'pay my salary' does that mean that you should never be inconvenieced in an effort to make sure you are abiding by the law? Checking you for your license everyday is ridiculous. Running through the middle of your decoys is ridiculous. Stopping his boat and working on his motor on top of you is ridiculous and should NEVER happen and is in no way necessary. But someone thinking that he/she ALLOWS me to do my job is just as ridiculous.

Verret

Ricky - that old GW on Verret got me years ago. I had my neice on the back of a jet ski and did a donut (and NO, he did not give me a break). He wrote me for endangering her safety. The next day, a storm came up on the lake. There was a kid in a bateau that couldn't get back to a pier. The camp next to us was hollering for the GW to help. The GW hollered back that the kid got himself out there, he could get himself back and then he left. We had to lower our boat and rescue this kid.

Wardens

It's a certain type of individual that feels the need to prove their authority , not necessarily the warden or the policeman .

Take for example all the volunteer firemen . 80 % of those guys just want to put red and blue lights on their vehicles and sleep with their raios on their pillow so they won't miss a gruesome automobile accident . I honestly beleive they Need to feel the authority like to turn on their lights and drive through ditches to get around traffic .

Not all wardens are bad but it certainly seems that certain stereotype goes after the game warden title .

And no not all volunteer firemen are bad either . But some do have some cool lights .

'But someone thinking that he/she ALLOWS me to do my job is just as ridiculous.'

Ever hear of the Constitution??? The government (you a police officer are the Government, JB) are granted limited powers through a little known document called the US Constitution. Thus, the PEOPLE do ALLOW you to cruise around with your badge and do your job.

Most notable here in the constitution is the fourth amendment which protects the citizens (the people that allow you to do your job) from unreasonable searches and seizures. Sure there are many exceptions that I don't have time to address, but anyone would think that the OP's situation was unreasonable. Does he have any recourse? Probably not, but I like the discussion because LE knows that they are being watched as much as anyone else.

PRWMA

I used to hunt the Pearl back in the late 80's and Mark Bible was the GW back then. He would paddle around in a pirouge and check everyone he could; sometimes right in the middle of a hunt. But he was not discourteous. Sometimes he would get out just at daylight and wait for someone to shoot early or shoot a big duck in teal season before he would paddle out and write the ticket. He also used to ride up and down the bayous and flash a handheld STOP sign to check hunters. I feel like he was just doing his job; it did not bother me because I was 100% legit and never had a problem. I chauk this most recent event up to abusing the capabilities of surface drive motors. They are bad news for WMA's; including the GW's using them - they should be outlawed on public land, and maybe the ducks would stick. Just my 2 cents.

What wasn't civil about my post? I did not use profanity. I did not call anyone a derogative name. I did not threaten anyone. All I did was ask an individual (who told me I need to wake up every morning and thank God that he allows me to do my job) that I would be happy to have him check my reports before I carry out my job duties.

motorboat - what, in this situation, made this an unreasonable search or seizure? When hunting private or public land you are subject to search. The Officer running through a decoy spread and damaging an individual's equipment is uncalled for and needs to be replaced. But, being checked in the middle of a hunt is something that has to be tolerated. If GW's waited for hunters to get back to the landing can you imagine the complaints about holding people up and congesting the ramp that would ensue?

Sorry to hear you had such a bad experience. Definitely unacceptable! I wanted to share my experience. Last year I had the same warden check me three times in one week. I always tried to be polite and offer him a water or something. finally on the third time I asked him ' are you gonna do this every time you see me? If so I will put the rods down open the ice chest and have my license out before you get here!' He gave me a puzzled look and opened my ice chest again. He looked at a couple of reds that I caught and asked the length. He proceeded to check each one and my numbers were correct. He closed up and wished me luck. Since then when I see him he slows down and waives and moves on.

I guess it finally clicked for him that I wasn't an outlaw!

There is one thing that I could never understand. why do agents have to go to your blind or stand to check if you have a license. Do the state police stop you on the road to see if you have a drivers license. Sure they can check you after the hunt to see if you have over the limit or you have violated some law, but why go to your blind or stand and ruin your hunt. Why do these guys carry guns? We need these agents of this I have no dout. WE should be respectful because they serve a purpose. They should equally be respectful of the people that pay their salaries.

Randy - I apologize. It just REALLY irks me when people think LE should bow down to them and kiss their feet because 'I pay your salary.' It works both ways, law enforcement should not act high and mighty when doing their job. BUT, Joe Q Public should not act like the Officer should 'thank God every morning' that they allow Officers to do the job. Thanks for you support.

If you hunt/fish, you might get checked. The GW will interrupt your day for a few minutes and then SHOULD leave and allow your outing to continue uninterrupted. If this is not the case and you feel you are being harrassed, file a complaint. I can PROMISE you, the majority of departments do not take complaints lightly.

My last time to comment on the 'we pay your salary' mentality. The vast majority of us with jobs, rely on others. You want to put ANYBODY on the defensive, tell them you pay their salary and see what kind of attitude that creates.

Yea that guy was ridiculous. Quick story. Years ago my buddy got a new bass boat, so we decided to go to the lake and run it. We launched at attakapa (spelling?) and headed across the lake. Whenever we reached the middle of the lake, we did as anyone with a new bass boat would do and opened her up. Well low and behold here comes supercop and pulled us over. Ticketed for dangerous operation, too small of an air horn, 'Non-Functioning' life jacket (One of the four buckles were broken), and i flicked my cigerette in the water as we were getting ticked because i wasnt thinking and by some miracle gave me a warning for that and made me keep an eye on it so we could get it when we left. There was no heart behind those Ray Ban sunglasses haha

And that kid your talking about on the bateau, was that about 8 - 10 years ago?

WHAT????

Ricky - No it wasn't 8-10 years ago. More like 12-13, I think. Our camp was on Shell Beach Rd, where the old public landing used to be. His partner, the day I got the ticket on the jet ski, apologized to me for the way the old guy was acting. If I can say anything about him it's, he did NOT show favoritism. He was a jerk to everyone!!

I have ran across several officers like that in my 14 years. From Secret Service and FBI all the way to PoDunk PD, they are out there. That goes for every occupation though.

most of my experiences with Wardens have been positive, once on Lake Verret I was checked had an old reg. the warden called in and saw I was current, told me to get a new one.
Once I was at Bayou Macon WMA. in north La. when
I wandered up on a warden, he asked where my self clearing permit was, I told him they were out at checkin station, he told me if that ever happened again to write my name and adress on a regular piece of paper and leave it in box. found out he was from down south became friends, he told me a good place to hunt, and also pulled me out of the ditch once. his name was Scott.

Respect is earned not taken

Years ago I was in the Lake Verret area and got pulled over by a well known GW for not having my bow light on. It wasnt even dusk, he began a heated lecture (@ss chewing) and writing in his ticket book. I told him I would either take a ticket or the 'lecture', but wasn't going to have 'em both! He wrote the ticket and said he was trying to keep everyone safe. When my light wouldn't work, he made us all put on pfds and towed us to the nearest launch. In the mean time, a boat load of 'drunks' ran into a dock. My point being, the majority of people are abiding by the law, it's not wrong to check people to keep them honest, sometimes it's the approach taken. Had he made sure I wasn't drinking and went to check the next boat, that accident may have been prevented.

I respect and thank all law enforcement for doing a job that I personally would not want to do. My dad is a deputy and tries to treat all people with respect and dignity. He serves criminal warrants and goes out of his way to give people a chance to do the right thing. If they cooperate, he continues to be respectful, even to the point of not cuffing people in front of their kids or coworkers. If they run or hide, they get the hard nosed, straight faced deputy that will arrest them and make no attempt to 'give them a break'.

The conduct displayed by the GW that ran through the decoys, is a blatant disrespect for sportmen and would anger other law enforcement officers that pride themselves with being fair and courteous. When I encounter any branch of law enforcement, I make the first effort to show respect. The attitude of the officer determines whether we part ways with a hand shake or hard feelings, and a ticket doesn't sway my opinion.

my experience

If you recall a post a couple months ago 'sharing my experience with the wardens'....that was mine. I got over 6500 views on that one and am pretty proud of that by the way!! Anyway, received the arrest notice for trespassing on my own lease as well as hunting from a public road citation because i had a loaded 22 mag revolver on a dirt road that cut through the lease (which is not against the law, the GW did not know the provisions of that law and is wrong). My courtdate is Nov. 13th so i will be posting the results to that in the near future. I cant see how it could be possible for them to find me guilty since I was unlawfully arrested. But just the fact that i have to take the time from work to deal with these idiots would enrage any of us. Many more times than not I have found LE to have that chip on their shoulder when either being checked or ticketed. Why cant all of them just be polite? We are all human and all make mistakes, the same mistakes all cops make! Just wanted to give explanation for my earlier posts of my obvious dislike for LE.

After reading the article on the home page about the guys that were 47 reds over their limit, we should all be thankful for law enforcement. If there were no GWs, our wildlife resources would all suffer. These are the type of guys that give sportsman a bad name and cause the GW to suspect otherwise law abiding sportsmen of wrong doing. Just like a bad experience with a GW gives all GWs a bad name, we are also subject to those stereotypes because of guys like these!!!

That is a bad deal! Hope your court date goes well and the truth prevails. That's the problem with the system, you miss work and hire a lawyer to represent you and that all cost you. I think legislation should be applied to that just like frivolous lawsuits. If you are found innocent, you should be reimbursed for your losses. When an overzealous agent cost their agency money, they would think about the situation before handing out tickets so freely. Most people take the lick and just pay the fines, instead of going to court because of the monetary losses. When people give up their day in court, the officer is right and that trend is what empowers the cocky, Barney Fife types.

HARD2CATCH - AGREED

100% agree! They count on most people just paying the fine and moving on. My fiance was on a bachelorette party with i believe 16 or so other girls. She was the first one of all her friends out the door of the bar at closing time so she walked over to a nearby streetlight on the sidewalk to wait for her friends. She claims the street was very crowded with questionable looking groups of people all around. A mounted police officer approached her and told her she could not stand there and demanded she proceed into the street. she told the idiot that was potentially endangering her safety that she was waiting on any of her friends to walk out and she was alone and did not feel safe walking into the crowd alone. He demanded she move into crowd again and when she repeated herself and did not comply, he placed her under arrest for remaining after forbidden (which is a level 2 trespass offense). My fiance was arrested for doing the one thing i ask her to do anytime she goes out without me, which is never go anywhere alone.(Safety in numbers) This policeman needed his non-existing brains beat in! I went to her arraignment and explained to the DA what happened and how his officer wrongfully arrested my fiance because you cannot trespass on a public sidewalk (i had a copy of the actual statute and the officers statement even stating she was on the sidewalk,,,moron). The charge was obviously dismissed and the DA sincerly apologized for his officers actions, guess the politenes is the difference between an educated DA and a non-educated cop, but what a waste of day and also the humiliation of being arrested by some power-tripping moron. NEVER JUST PAY THE FINE IF YOU BELIEVE YOU ARE NOT GUILTY!!! RESEARCH THE LAWS BECAUSE THE POLICE DO NOT KNOW EVERY STATUTE AND THEIR PROVISIONS BY HEART!!!

It is a privilege to hunt your own land. The reason being is that you are supposed to have the requisite hunting license, which is a privilege like a driver's license. It doesn't mean that hunting on YOUR land period is a privilege, it's that hunting itself is a privilege.

Easy Now

Well it seams this post has taken off in several directions. After reading all the comments i just want to set a few things straight about the post.
I do not have anything against law enforcement, and as far as power tripping agents they dont realy bother me either. My Father-in-law was a Game Warden for 20 years, it is a job that must be done. My concern was the checking in the middle of the hunt, and the disconcern for our time we had to go hunting on those days. As I'm sure is the case for most of you we can't go hunting every day, in fact that was the only trip i will be able to make for teal, and it was cut short.
The warden running his boat through our decoys and into our boat was not a big issue either it just added to the frustration, I hope it was not done on purpose it seemed to me it was just haste and inexperience behind the wheel of a boat that lead to that.
thats all, now you can go back to your arguing haha

SBledHed-wrong!

Are you a cop or something? You just based your arguement on an assumption. My fiance does that all the time, and it kills me! Point being, I hunt in Ms., you do not need a license to hunt lands titled in your name. Check the handbook if you do not beleive me. Thus, it is my right as a landowner, not a privilege! Glad we got that straight!

right vs. privilege

HECK! These two words are so closely related....who cares! I was just making an arguement with trent_buxton stating so matter of fact that it wasn't our right it was a privilege bestowed upon us from King Obama or something like that...

Resident of Mississippi

Hey lormanbogg, you are right you do not have to have a hunting license to hunt on your titled land in Ms. as long as you are a resident of the state.
good luck!

...that Mississippi law kind'a shows us what is first...private or collective ???...had a disgrunted tippsey Louisiana attorney mumble to me once there are more than 400 Napoleon laws that his peers don't want change until after they retire in splendor w/new 1938 retainer Buicks...that was 70 years ago and just start'n to figger it out ???...cheers

P/S...by the way, they had 'dem big wide white-walled tires and runn'n boards ???

P/S again...also even a non-res. could fish w/o a license and spend a great deal on the Mississippi coast if they paid property tax on a summer home...(short-sighted Louisiana jugglers messed up'dat income they could have had)

That's a shame

I did not base the argument on any assumption at all. It is not even an argument, rather a statement of fact. Just like you are not SUPPOSE to fish without a license, you are not SUPPOSE to hunt without a license. At least in LA. I'm no expert on Mississippi law and do not claim to be. Thus in LA, you can hunt on your land... with a license. Ask a GW they'll tell you. Once again this is in LA for I do not know how things are done in Mississippi, I do not hunt there. And since Hunting licenses are a privilege, which can be taken away given good cause, even hunting on your own land is a privilege. Remember I am speaking of LA not MS, and I am talking about Hunting (for deer, hogs, etc) not shooting a snake or something.

Not a Cop

I am not any type of LEO. Just someone who pays attention to the laws that govern me within the Sportsman's Paradise. I did not mean to offend anyone I was just setting things straight before someone goes hunt without a license on their property in LA and gets caught (some people are that slow). So don't get so touchy, for I wasn't even talking about MS.

Game Wardens

I had a warden check me on Friday in Salvador WMA. I was scouting deer and came out into the lake when he stopped me. He check my boat registration, license, and drivers license. I did not have a fire extinguisher and also had my gas powered pole saw with me.He gave me a warning about the extinguisher and asked what was the pole saw doing in the boat. I repleid truthfully, 'I had it in my truck since I went cut trees on my lease the prior day and did not want it stolen at the launch, so I brought it along.' He was fine with that. That man never gave me an attitude, and did his job accordingly. He could have gave me a ticket for the extinguisher and the pole saw, but didn't. I agree with his professionalism, but we do have jerks that abuse their spot. Remember to get their name, it is on their shirt, and file a formal complaint if warranted. But also remember, law enforcement will treat you with a harsh attitude if you have an attitude. So we need to be cordial when encountering them as well, because they do a job that most will not consider.

Lormanbug

Just curious, which parish was your fiancee arrested in?? Sounds like lafourche parish cops lol They have some of the worst cases of small man syndrome i have ever seen.

Edit: Just read they were mounted officers. No horses in Thibodaux unless it's mardi gras.

As far as LEO go, i treat them the way they treat me. Some of them go into law enforcement just for the badge and the authority or because they were antagonized in high school and being an officer gives them a sense of power. Thats just my opinion. Not saying they are all like that, but you catch my drift. Like someone said earlier, the good suffer for the bad and it goes both ways. Meaning: civilians views towards officers and vice versa.

complete respect to most wardens.

i respect all law enforcement officials the same, yessir no sir, respect. well we had a run in with them over the summer, keep in mind i just turned 19 and my buddy 20, well anyways we was out in reserve canal fishing and my buddy who had like 9 or so crab traps in lake maurespas just wanted to go check them to see how they were doing. so we went ride out their picked up like 25 crabs at the most and came back in and fished for a little bit, on the way back about 30 yards from the launch the triton pulls up behind us and another boat that were going to pick up (about 7:30pm), and they check us for licenses and so we had our fishing licenses and was very respectful, the older warden was a really cool guy, the young guy(about mid 20's maybe 30) seemed edgy asking about the 20 or so crabs we told them about. well it turns out my buddys dad gave him the crab traps to go run in the lake a few weeks back and the wardens wanted to check them, so they got in the triton and went look at the traps and i docked the boat. they get back and the traps are on back the triton and i say to myself oh no whats going on. it turns out his dad just aqcuired traps over the years fixed them up and put bouys on them, but now a days you need a trappers license and all kinds of bs to recreationaly crab!!! my buddy had no idea of this or the fact that the traps werent his, bc his dad who grew up in a generation where all this nonsense was unnecessary and people were respectful, well the young warden starts getting rouled up and talking about making arrest and such, but thankfully the older warden was more respectful and just us tickets. but still i recieved a ticket for theft on stolen crab traps and running un tagged trapps. which could have been a felony on my record and could have gotten charges pressed upon us. good thing we went talk to the d.a. and explain everything, and we just got off with a fine. i think their are so many rules in the outdoors today that they are just looking for ways to trap these innocent ppl who want to do what they love to do. Wardens need to be more level headed and not so gun-ho to hem someone up for a simple mistake. i know they are supposed to enforce the law, but sometimes letting someone off with a warning and advice is better then them leaving with a ticket they have to deal with.

Are you sure that game warden's name was Dickey Babin? There was a Dickey Breaux who was a game warden in that area.
