glass gulf at sunset, fun times & big fish

Crazy weekend, here’s a few pics from Friday’s trip. I’ll post today’s trip soon. Weather was perfect Friday, but went running on the beach then fishing for big fish and close offshore rigs instead of waking super early for trout. Weather became dead calm after dodging a few midday storms and we went out of whiskey pass. The big black tip was 1 inch too short to keep but was a fun fight off of last island’s surf. Hammered the bluefish and Spanish mackrel at the rigs ending up with two dozen nice 2-4lbers and a big 25lb jack chervelle on jigging spoons, rattletraps and big jigs. Missed a couple big fish, one was a lemon fish which popped me in the rig. Then caught this big 82lb stingray on cut mullet on the bottom. The action was relentless and nonstop. My girl loved it and she caught two bluefish at a time on a rattletrap twice. We fished through sunset in the glass calm gulf. Every cast at every rig was a fish.

Last week I was posting on eating jack so I’ll try him out this week since I never have before. Also my previous post from a few weeks was inquiring about stingray so I kept him and have the meat marinating up, so we’ll see how it goes too. I love me some bluefish and if you don’t soak them in water and cut the redmeat out they stay firm and taste great imo. Also since the meat is mushier like choupic and doesn’t freeze well. I like making fish patties with them and freezing the patties.

Jack good, stingray no good.

lol, not at all, i have a hunger for all fish, but now not so much for stingray and mullet.

Came back from Tulane's track practice too late too cook last night so i heated up leftover deer shoulder. Just finished cooking up the big jack and stingray for lunch. The big 31 pound jack wasn't quite as good as the small one but still had the same tuna like texture and wasn't bad tasting at all. I really enjoyed it marinated in buttermilk then blackened in olive oil. I still can't wait to try some smoked, on the bbq pit or made as tuna salad for sandwiches. I read a post somewhere that it tasted like beef. No way, but it does look like a deer backstrap so if you want to mess with someone, give em some jack and say its backstrap!

I grilled up the sting ray in small chunks as i would scallops with lite butter and onions. It was edible but not close to expensive sea scallops as i had read so i won't be bothering with any more rays unless i'm stuck on a deserted island! Though nothing goes to waste with my two dogs. They loved them some stingray just now!

One more question

When those two bluefish hit that trap, I bet they almost took the rod out of her hands????

almost

almost! Yeah, catching two at time was crazy fun and they fight hard. I love watching them bluefish come airborn. Laura actually had a pair tailwalk together on the rattletrap, quite the site but then one came off.
