Question

I have an old lightening flight PSE . I bought it used about 15 years ago and it was in great shape then , and still seems to be in descent shape . The last time I changed the string was about 4 years ago . The string still seems to be in good shape and I keep it waxed pretty good . At what point does the bow become to old to shoot ? Do the arms just all of a sudden break when it gets old ? It still shoots very good and very accurate and have killed quite a few deer with it , just want to avoid a trip to the ER .
Thanks

whenever

I have a Bear Kodiak recurve from early '70's, a whitetail hunter compound, first Browning compound they made, late '70's, and early '80's Martin Cougar II compound. All of these except the recurve have the same string, kept well waxed. I accidently cut my bowstring on top of Black Mt. near Craig, Colo. on my first ever mule deer hunt. I had to use my extra string without a nocking point. Later that evening i killed my first ever mule deer with an 80yd. running shot to the back of the neck.lol I have a stone tomahawk i found, but i seldom use it.lol

Wow !

80 yd running shot to the neck ! Hmm . Jeremiah Johnson don't have nothing on you ! And I knew you had a tomahawk laying around somewhere . Lol you need to come make a couple hunts with us , sounds like . We have some similar stories ...

My string broke once while I was shooting my bow . The arrow went straight up in the air and I had a large Welp on the side of my face ! Not sure exactly what happen other than my string broke . Just don't want that to happen anymore and wasn't sure about the arms .

. All my buddy's get new bows almost every year . I'm still satisfied with the one I got . Wasn't sure if they get new ones because they were afraid their old ones would break . Lol

Old Bows

I have an old Bear Bow from the early 80's. Maybe a 10% let off. I last hunted with it in 96 I think. The limbs stayed in good shape. A good visual inspection at the Pro-shop goes a long way.

running shot

I've always said, better to be lucky than good.lol If u have ever seen mule deer 'stotting', this one bounced up at the wrong time. He looked like a center fielder jumping for a fly ball and my first ever shot, flung in frustration after blown stalk, hit him in the back of his neck and came out the side of his face. You could follow the blood on the white barked aspen trees. As for JJ, he had a gun, i had a recurve and wooden arrows. Two things i know, never tent camp in grizz country and dont piss off the nates.lol Would love to make a hunt but we live in a 1970's bubble, if we dont see 15 deer every hunt, we get bored.

Dang !

I figured it was one of those hold my beer and watch this shots . By looking at that last picture I'm certain it was one of those shots . Lol

Once when my son was about 9 years old I pushed him in a pirogue 2 miles through the swamp . It was a honey hole . We saw 18 deer , and he never fired a shot . We were jumping the deer and he could never get settled for a shot . (watching too many hunting shows ) Anyways when we got to the turnaround point , I threw down my push pole and layed in the bottom of the pirogue in exhaustion ... My son turned around and says , dad , my back is kind of hurting from sitting on this ice chest so long ! Lol but that was by far the most I had ever seen in one day in the swamp .

yep

LMAO, thats a good one. Admiral, those guys are mormons fron St. George, Utah. They never left camp without a beer in each pocket.lol I met them on diy mule deer hunt on the Paunseguant and Kiabab plateaus in utah/arizona. They thought i was a possum cop, but invited me to camp with them. We went to camp, ate dinner, made a deer drive, i walked 200yds, found a lava flow, sat on the edge, deer came 8 steps away, i had to wait till his eye went behind a small tree to draw. After two weeks i asked them where were all the mormons? They said we all mormons, only the pligs wear those little beards.oopslolCheck that big deer and u will see my horns INSIDE that monster my friend killed, also at 8 steps.lol see the hatchet in group pic?

Hatchet

This has nothing to do with archery but huntr you mentioned a hatchet . Would that be a legal means of hunting ? Or does it have to be with a gun or bow in La. ? Just wondering ... Say your walking down the road and see a deer close and you pick up a rock and throw it at the deer and luck up and hit the deer in the right place and drop it . Would that be legal if it was hunting season ?

rocks

Well its funny, i've always said, if u have a limit what does it matter how u kill them, even with a rock, but i dont think its legal in la., lucky thing i wasnt, besides we claimed self-defense.lol There are dozens of experts out screaming to the old fart to change that string. The truth is, if u feel like ur string needs changing, change it. thats something u never want to feel unsure about, and always check with a pro if ur not. Sorry about that welp, once caught the tip of my nose.ouch!

get it checked out

I would definitely bring it to an archery shop just so they can check to see if the limbs are still good or not. Change the string out for sure.. then if you dont want to go through all the servicing trouble for an older bow you can pick up nice entry class bows for pretty cheap these days.

LIGHTNING FLIGHT

Bought my PSE LIGHTNING FLIGHT new around 20 years ago. Still killin' with it. Changed the string once I believe. Awesome bow. Rated for 70 lbs, but mine has been maxed out at 83 lbs for many years with no problems and is accurate enough. New bows look tempting, but don't need one. I use my PSE out to 40 yds and my recurve when huntin' the tight spots.

Cool

My string has been changed twice ? Maybe . It's still very accurate . I know what you mean about new bows being tempting . My buddies are always getting new bows and I was just concerned that maybe the arms get weak ... Mine is set at 60 lbs . I can pull it back and put my head between the string if I wanted . It's got a bunch of let off almost 100% it seems . I'm very comfortable handling it and shooting up to 40 yds . Only thing it's getting a lil loud .

SILENCE

I quieted mine down with the big round stick on rubber dampeners stuck to the inside of the limbs, limbsaver string silencers, a dampener that slides on the end of the cable guard, small stick on dampeners on the sight guard and on the quiver and I also have a hydraulic stabilizer on it. The hydraulic stabilizer makes a Huge difference !
