I just got off a lease an hour west of Houston we've been on since '85. Low fence cattle ranch. You will sit and see 10-15 deer per hunt, mostly does and small bucks. Mandatory 13 inch inside spread is Texas law in that area. You have to hunt pretty hard to see a legal buck, they don't get very wide or big in that area. My son couldn't handle a big gun at 6 years old. At 7, I let him shoot a doe. The next year same thing another doe. I figured it was a good ideal to make him kill does to appreciate his first buck that much more. This year he killed a doe, stayed in the stand and 45 minutes later a buck came out on the pipeline right of way. He dropped him in his tracks at 180 yds. We where both very proud. We have feeders, but more times than not, the acorn crop is so good, only hogs come to the feeders. In short, make him wait.
I couldn't agree more deerman .. When my son was small we joined a lease in Miss. It's like a zoo . I brought him there to get a few deer under his belt and just get the idea mainly . I've hunt the swamp most of my life so it was a drastic change for me , seeing all these deer and can't shoot what you want . There's nothing bad about it , I guess , just not my cup of tea . My son will be 14 this year and I've bought him a climber and started trying to teach him how to HUNT deer . I think he would love it either way but thinking he will appreciate it a lot more having to hunt to kill . I've said in the past if you kill a 12 point in Miss. it's no big deal , you just throw the horns in a pile with the rest of the horns .. If you kill a spike in the swamp you ride around with it on the hood of your truck for a while .
I don't get into the whole I'm a better hunter debate because me or you have more deer on our land. Unless its high fence, its hunting in my book. I've always had a lease growing up, some didn't have many deer, some did.
I kinda look at like this, when I was a single man, I didn't go to the bars that had a few scrubby women there. I went to the ones that had the most women. Improves the chances of some good looking ones, and chances of sticking my arrow in one.
I'm going to give it a shot hunting WMA areas this year for the first time. I never really liked the ideal of walking on the woods while a bunch of people I don't know have high powered rifles. I'll be giving Tensas and Sherburne a shot during bow season. Never stepped a foot on either. Hopefully some luck and pre season scouting will get the job done.
Hey man that was a great deer your son killed and I know it was a awesome experience for the both of you . I wasn't trying to start a debate over anything , just kind of agreeing with deermans original post . Its awesome that you bring your son out deer hunting , some don't .
We just enjoy where we hunt , and when we do kill it would probably be a cull anywhere else , but it's a trophy to us .
I've never compared deer hunting to women , and you have an interesting take on that . I guess you got to do what you got to do in either case .
Good luck on the WMAs this year .
Agree with choupic man! I hunt a few places from here to kentucky and have killed deer all over. But if I had one place to pick where to get a trophy it would be the louisiana swamp. Here everything is a trophy because it is earned. Hunt out of state and then here and you will see how much more nocturnal and wild our deer are. The deer here are more challenging to hunt than anyhere I have ever hunted, and there is no debating that.
I agree Deerman. Those shows are killing the true meaning of hunting - enjoying the outdoors and the hunt, and taking home some meat if possible. I well remember my first deer, a fat doe on public land. What a trophy that was!
