Thanks for the advice. I bought a Mt. CUR registered in the OMCBA. Both parents hunt and has a pretty good bloodline, so we'll see what happens. Trying not to get to fired up because he is just a pup and you never know how he will turn out, but he is showing a lot of hope. Keeping my fingers crossed!!!
If you can live trap a squirrel, coon, or even a cat, that will push his button. Drag the trap to a tree and Put the trapped animal in the trap up in a tree about 6' high. Walk the pup around and he will probably cut the trail and go to it. If he can't figure it out, go to the tree and pat the tree and say speak. Once he sees it he'll come alive. Do NOT turn the trapped animal loose on the pup. A coon or cat can put a good whooping on a pup which might make him lose interest quickly. It's fun to watch but don't over do it. About 15 minutes every two or three weeks.
Squirrel hunting w/dog is a fun sport. Start you pup with the basic obedience trainning, call by name, learn to lead, learn to load, etc. You want him friendly but don't let him get all over you. If you have kids don't let them treat him like a stuff animal. Keep commands to one or two words. He won't understand conservation just confuse him. Get him use to noise, like bang his food bowl at feeding will lead to shooting to prevent gun shy.
If you have squirrels in your yard that will be a plus otherwise you need to get him in the woods as much as possible. Yard squirrels are a good start but that is by sight. You needs to get in the woods and let him use his nose. Squirrel dogs locate game by sight, scent, and sound.
When he trees, leash him to the tree and shoot the squirrel. Turn him loose and let him find and wool him a bit. Give him good praise and tell him to find another.
I've been hunting with dogs all my life and I've had more bad ones than good ones. A fellow told me not to fall in love with my dog cause I might wind up shooting him.
Don't get in a hurry, it usually takes a year or two to see what you got.
The youngest I had to tree was 5months( blackmouth cur)
Killed her first squirrel at six months. Killed about 90 squirrels he first year.
Good luck
P.S. Strongly advise to use a tracking collar, always. Shock collars are great training aids also. Make sure you KNOW what he's doing before you use it.
