Here is a quick rundown:
Use Spincast reels with 14-20 lb braided line & medium action rod. For surf fishing live bait you will either use a cork or use a carolina rig. Get a couple of rattling/popping corks and tie a 18 inch 30lb mono leader from the cork to a 2/0 kahle hook or a size 4 treble hook. Use the same leader/hook combo for a carolina rig except add a barrel swivel and an egg sinker.
Get some live shrimp, minnows, croakers or pogies and start casting from the beach before you even get your feet wet. If you do not get any bites that shallow then walk a few feet into the water and try there. If nothing, just go a little deeper until you find them.
You will need a floating bait net to keep your bait alive and another for your fish. I do not recommend putting your fish on a stringer that is attached to your hip because there are a lot of sharks out there.
For night fishing, hit the Grand Isle bridge and bring live shrimp AND live pogies as well as any small white plastic baits you may have. White trout show up at dark and the speckeled trout sometimes do not get there until 2-4 in the morning. Save your live bait for the specks and use plastics for the white trout.
Hope this helps. Good Luck!
good advice copperhead. You could also try the rock jetties behind bridgeside. Just park by the levee right next to bridgeside, cross the levee, and take a right. Walk along the beach until you get to the rocks. I have found this area to be very good early morning and evening. This is probably the most consistent place in Grand Isle (with no boat). But I still find myself in the surf more times than not because I love to wade fish. Either way you go, you cant go wrong.
As far as what to bring, I would suggest a heavy duty lawn wagon from lowes or home depot. I have the big yellow one with expanded metal sides and big pnuematic tires. Works great for pulling through the sand to haul ice chests, bait buckets, lawn chairs, ect. In my opinion, this is a must have for grand isle. I think I paid around $80 for mine, well worth it.
Just got back today. We did pretty good on the rocks starting at the grocery store. Most were caught on live shrimp under cork with a few coming on plastics. Few throwbacks with some occ. good sized trout as well as trash fish. Will be back at em this wknd with my crew (5 kids). Good luck.
