Maybe this will help you, but from empire the first set of dooable rigs in about 60-70 ft of water that has given up snappers are abour 16-17 miles southwest of the jetties. Assuming you are running from grand isle then it would probably be about 17 miles southeast. If all else fails keep running south, you'll see the rigs. I mean once you make out a rig, its a good 6-7 miles in distance.
Launch at the public launch in Port Fourchon. Head due south out of the pass for 25 miles. My favorite rigs are almost perfectly lined up with the pass at fourchon. Wish knew the numbers of them. The rip has been about 25 miles out lately too. Catchin dolphin out near it. Use live hardtails for chickens.
Launch at the Fourchon public boat launch. 10 times better than any launch on Grand Isle. Head due south approx. 18 mile from Bell Pass to ST 63/86. You should have no trouble catching yor limit there. Water is 80-90'. To catch the bigger fish circle the structure and find the school of snapper away from the rig (which are usually bigger). They can sometimes be 50 yards away from the rig.
Eight-inch,
I think I'd stop to possibly give him instructions but not sure if i'd get my hands dirty. I know I'm a little late on the post but may help for next year. I've been hitting ST63 & 86 for the past several years and haven't had to look for a different area since. 5 trips this year and had one of our best years ever with lots of snapper, mangrove, lane snapper and cobia. Threw in about a 200 lb tiger shark a few king mackeral, lots of break off's. This area should do you good for starters.
Hey its funny because I was about to ask the same thing. This weekend we are going to try to fish out of fourchon. We just got a bigger boat so we want to try to go catch some snapper. What is a good rig or area to start off at and go from there? Any tips will help.
