please someone explain to me why a .300 is 'too big a bullet' for white tails, 30cal bullet is a 30cal bullet, 30.06 is a 30cal bullet available in a wide variety of weights 150gr - 180gr and probably more, 300mag is available also in 150gr - 180gr and probably more as well, i don't ever hear any one say a 30.06 is to big, but it is virtually the same round, difference being powder, 300 has more powder pushing the same size projectile, which interprets to a flatter shooting round, seems to me that a 300 would be a better round than a 30.06, i shoot a 270 but can't understand why so many people are against a 300 for white tails
you are right. the projectile size is the same as a 3006, A 300 IS ACTUALLY A 3006 MAGNUM. THE AMOUNT OF POWDER IS MORE IN A 300WM BUT THE PROJECTILE IS THE SAME. THE VOLOCITY IS MORE WHICH GIVES YOU A BIGGER BANG. i don't find that the 300 distroys more meat unless you hit the shoulder bone and then you have more of a mess. To each his own.
i also hunt with a .270 and a .300wsm...my .300 is sighted in at 300 yards and i shoot winchester ballistic silvertip 180gr out of it and i love them...3-shot groups of 2-1/2 in at 300 yards is pretty stout in my book...i have tried 7 or 8 different loads and in my opinion you just have to find what your rifle likes...the rifle is a tikka t3 and the only knock i have on it is it is somewhat picky with ammo..
Well, where i personally do not allocate people to hunt whitetails with 300's i would recommend Federal Premium. I personally shoot FP in 150g Noslar Partitions. I have shot 15 different bullet types in 3 different grains from 6 different brands in my gun and the FP out performs them all hands down. But that's just me, every gun is different, you kinda have to find the bullet your particular gun shoots best. I shoot a Remington 700 in .270 cal. There are 2 guys in my hunting club who shoot the exact same gun as mine except their guns don't shoot my bullet as well. One guy's gun likes Remington Core Lokt *strange* and the other guy shoots Hornady better. My gun as well as my father's Remington model 721 in .270 both HATE remington bullets for whatever reason. So you gotta play around and find the one that works best.
