Id say the bigger the chain the better. The chains obviously weights more than rope....when you pull on just rope the rope pulls upwards instead of sideways, this makes it very hard for your anchor to dig in to the bottom. The anchor will still work without the chain but you will have to let ALOT of rope out to get it to stick. Even with the chain after you put the anchor out hold the rope as low to the water as possible and pull sideways to set it, not upwards. Hope this helps! P.S. id stay away from the chains that are painted...in my opinion they dont work as well as just plain ole metal chain.
Another thing to make sure of is having enough rope out. If I remember correctly, rule of thumb is 1 1/2 (ex. 10ft of water needs 15ft of rope)times the depth of the water for your rope. That depends on the wind and current also, you may need more rope with higher winds/current. This way it lets the anchor lay more parallel to the bottom and the blades will bite better.

...chain,chain,chain...Danford in front,mushroom in back...kink,kink,kink !!!...(and don't rattle'em in the boat)...cheers
P/S...I've been wondering if anyone used them anymore ??? we have a folding one and a pretty rubberized mushroom for sale over 3 months and no bites...if we threw'em off the Manchac bridge and the hit a Louiaiana Sportsman Subscriber in the head...they might get damaged or bounce back up ???...cheers
i have 24 foot seapro with same anchor. no chain. i start by lower the anchor in the water not throwing it like i am in the olympics. i then let out all the rope i intend to use. you need three times the depth (for me at least). it always holds. the only time i have to reanchor is when the bottom is super hard.
Thats exactly why.I wouldnt count on the mushroom anchor holding you either way though. If I remember right you should have one inch of chain for every foot of boat.
