Offshore Fishing in Fourchon / Grand Isle in Southeast Louisiana
Nice Brownie.

Nice Brownie.

Snapper from Fouchon

It has been many moons, but I used to fish with a friend out of Belle Pass in the GI blocks somewhere. Mangroves were the order of the day with a few smaller genuines too. We always did pretty good, but in my youthfulness, I didn't pay attention to important stuff, like where I was! Anyway, I was looking at a map and wondered how far out do you need to go to get into 'snapper' waters. I see plenty rigs in about 40-55' about 5-6 mile SSE from Bell Pass, and a cluster just North of the LOOP in about 80+'. Are these areas good for snapper? thanks.

ANYBODY?

No hits; I guess everybody fishing down that way is keeping it tight lipped. I guess you just gotta go to know! I know those rigs should hold snapper, but I will be in a 19' bayboat if I get down there, so I need to pick a good one.

I don't know much about it, but...

I'm not an expert in any way. I've attempted snapper fishing twice, both times out of Fourchon in a boat way too small. Last year we ran 5-8 miles SE of Fourchon and never got to water much over 50 feet. I landed 1 mangrove snapper and we caught a bunch of other stuff (small cobia, spanish mackeral, lots of sharks, a couple of triggerfish), but no red snapper.

About a week ago, we ran SSE, probably around 12 miles out and found a max depth of 69 feet. We caught nothing at our first 3 stops, then got 2 red snapper and lost a couple more in not much time. About the time we started to figure it out, the thunderstorms started popping up and we got nervous and headed in for some near shore trout action. I think if we could have stayed a little longer we would have found more fish and maybe some mangroves. It is tough to do in a small boat. I think if we could just get out a little further, we'd find more fish. Be safe out there and good luck.

snapper fishing

Im no expert but i have had a good bit of success fishing the area you are talking about. Most of the time when we fish mangroves we cut pogies into 4 to 6 pieces and slowly chum them up to the surface and either free line a live croaker or insert the entire hook into a piece of a pogie. I would start 5 to 6 miles out and work your way out from there. Just remember im pretty sure your required to have a venting tool and circle hooks are mandatory. Good luck hope this helps.

Rigs

I fish that cluster of rigs North of the LOOP quite often. The red snapper are usually NOT there but we have caught some. That is a nice area for mangroves, white trout, spanish macs, and triggerfish. Also, the sharks are thicker there than anywhere I've ever been

How far.. how deep

Mangroves in sight of land. Red snapper you need about 90 foot of water. The course you take will greatly affect how far you need to run for red snapper. Try to stay pretty much due south heading or a little east.
