Do you have a motor on the boat or are you paddling? If you don't have a motor, you're probably better off bank fishing a local bayou or river with small bream or cut bait under a cork on at least a bass rod. A medium to large gar can be quite a handful, especially for a kid.

Try to let the gar take the bait for at least 30 sec before u set the hook. They can be hard to hook and sometimes swim with the bait before they swollow it enough to set the hook. Good luck.
