I AGREE WITH THE LAST REPORT IF YOU PLANT SOY BEANS THEY WILL EAT THEM AS SOON AS THEY COME UP. IF IT IS HOT AND NOT MUCH RAIN YOU WILL BE WASTING YOUR TIME. ANY THING YOU PLANT THIS TIME OF THE YEAR IS NOT WORTH THE COST. TAKE YOUR MONEY AND BUY A LOT OF PROTEIN BLOCKS. KEEP THE WEEDS FROM YOUR PLOTS AND KEEP YOUR MONEY IN YOUR POCKET UNTIL OCTOBER.
Eagle forage soybeans r the best summer plot. I have 2 properties in ms with eagle bean plots. I have 4 acres of beans on one and 1 acre on the other. U just have to keep the deer out for 45 days to let em get established. I use a 1/2 nylon ribbon 30' high around the perimeter of the plot. I spray perfume, soap, deodorant, etc. any odor that is new and foreign will work fine. I freshen it up as much as i can. I also tie white kitchen bags to the ribbon to create movement. It works, i do it every year. I have some pics of my foodplots in the forum and will post more thurs.
Like has been said, u can PLANT a lot of things, but unless u are a good farmer and have large plots, it will be hard to grow anything now with this drought. Better to feed protein now and wait for fall. Two reasons to leave your plots alone right now are does use them to hide their fawns and deer get a lot of food value from weeds. I have a plot broken into 4 sections. Last fall i fertilized all 4 but only planted 3, just bushhogging one. The deer spent just as much time each day in the weed patch as in the wheat/clover plot. If u disc now u will be destroying what food is there at a critical time and replace it with a dirt feild for at least a month or two.
Unless your planting more than 5 acres at one spot your wasting your time and money with soybeans, iron clay peas. They will eat them to the ground immediately and then the johnson grass will come and grow 5 ft tall because all the fertilizer will be unused. A better choice is Jointvetch and Alese clover mixed 50 50. Some places like Chags will sell it to you by the pound so you can buy just what you need so it makes it affordable. Easy to grow and deer love it but don't waste your time if on a dry sunburnt hill. Needs to be in a lower lying area that retains moisture and doesn't get all day sun, needs some tree shade.
